CMC Golden State/Skoal Bandif Series Round 6: Brown overtakes Novice points lead. at Sunrise By Tom Corley ADELANTO. CA, FEB. IS The newly formed 125cc Novice class is proving to be one of the tightest point contests throughout the Continental Motosport Club's Golden State Skoal Bandit Series. ~ 22 Today on the desert soil of Sunrise Valley Cycle Park a new leader emerged and this was Kevin Brown, who not only won both motos for the top trophy, but pulled into the series lead having 202 points. KTM rider Dean Morgan took an average seventhplace finish for the day, yet, still maintains 195 points for second. The rival against Brown during both motos was Georr Sanchez, who trails Morgan by one point at 19.,1. Going into this event Howard Mannes was on top, but due toa poor twelth-place finish, he was knocked back to fourth with 191 points. It was a match race during the opening round of the 125cc Novice class. Honda riders Kevin Brown and Ceo£[ Sanchez contended again t eacn other until the finish nag came out. Through the finish itwas Brown and then Sanchez. BTS Lubricants-rider Chuck Arman did a £ine job of catching up to third position despite taking a last-place start. Troy Moore lives in Palmdale and is familfar with this kind of de ert soil and captured fourth. Firth in the pack was Tyler Foster who also lives in Palmdale. The action was more intense during the fi nal moto. Once agai n Brown held the lead but this time Sanchez came even clo er to passing him. Sanchez made an unsuccessful attempt to pass the leader and dropped his bike around a berm. At this point Arman was right there to take away second place. Remounted on his Honda, Sanchez set after Arman and zapped him while hauling across some whoops. Sanchez regained second pLace but was unable to catch the leader Brown. Through the finish line it was Brown, Sanchez, Arman, Moore and Dan Crower. Brown proved to be the fastest in today's contest and holds the new series point lead as well. There is one race left at Spillway and several riders still have a chance to take the overall. Sanchez held the runner-up spot all day and was second overall. Arman took two thirds for that position. Moore was, yet, another rider who placed exactly the same in both motos and his 4-4 tally earned him fourth. Crow~r was fifth with a tally of 6-5. Whereas the I25cc Novice class is a tight point battle, the 250cc Novice class is led 'with a great margin by Ken Faught. A new conte tant is on the loose and this is SD Racing' Jerr Montgomery. Montgomery took second to Ken Faught last week at Carlsbad, but today he swept both motos for the overall. In the open ing moto Montgomery was side by side with another rider until the second turn. By that time Jeff built up a lead that kept increasing until the end of the race. Montgomery took the clean victory ahead of Faught, Anthony James, Billy Bouck and Marc "Flyin Part II" Peter . In the final moto Montgomery pulled a killer hoJeshot that put him ahead of the pack. Similar to the first moto he built up a substantial lead. Bouck was second ahead of James, Faught and Reinal DelaCerda. Results 60 THRU B: 1. Damon Huffman (Kaw); 2. Jacob Swain (Kawl; 3. Ryan Spurgin IKawl. 60 9- 11: 1. Jimmy Button (Han); 2. Benedict blasts 'em for a DeAnza MXwin By Michael Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, FEB. 19 Honda-mounted Larry Benedict stunned a 12-man class of 250cc Intermediates with two wire-to-wire wins lOday .at DeAnza Cycle Park. After separating his shoulder during the Go.lden State Series, Benedict faced his competition with alJlazing confidence, especially considering the fact that ex-Pro Keith Dysert (Suz) was also making a comeback and decided to race the Intermediate class. Benedict grabbed the holeshot in the first moto followed closely by Malcolm Smith's Bill Lustrick (Yam) and Tom Thomsen (Yam). John Burr Cycles' Bruce Harerow (Hon) and Bob Stephenson (Hon) were battling for fourth while Suzuki-mounted Luther French showed Dysert the hot lines for a few laps. Benedict, riding like a well prepped professional, flew . through the first five Laps so quickly that his closest competitor was 20 seconds behind. Harerow moved into second, but not without a good fight from Lu trick. By the half-way point, the order was Benedict, Harerow, Stephenson and Lustrick, who was receiving a lot of pressure from Thomsen. Unfortunately, Thomsen wore himself out and gave up fifth pLace to French, with Ruben Alvarado (Suz) and Dysert getting by as well. Benedict rode smooth and steady to the first-moto win, with second and third going to Harerow and Stephenson, respectively. Benedict pulled orr another perfect start in moto two, with Harerow and Lustrick hot on his heels. Dysert showed some of his true speed by forcing his way to third by lap three. .Alvarado's moto was also progressing a bit more uccessfully than his first, as'he wa running a strong fifth and was moving through some fast 125cc Intermediate traffic. ·Stephenson moved into fourth behind Dysert, and began nu tering the Suzuki pilot with his steady pressure. Dysert went down on lap eight, making the order of the top three identical to the first moto, with Benedict still out in from. Alvarado started fading around lap ten, and shortly there after gave in to Thomsen, who wen t on to take fourth behind Benedict. Harerow and Stephenson. French was awarded the last trophy (fourth place) with a hard earned 4-S score. Results PEE WEE: 1. Eddie Morago (Yaml; 2. Billy Valko (Yom); 3. Troy Holing (Yom). DIV 2: 1. John Williams (Suzl.
