CMC Golden State/Sltoal Bandit Series: RoundS Hicks increases Mini Expert lead at Carlsbad Sportsman Day By Tom Corley CARLSBAD, CA, FEB. 12 Continental Motosport Club's Golden State/ Skoal Bandit Series returned to the Southland with a sport'sman only event at Carlsbad Raceway. Continuing his row of wins in the 80cc Expert class, DMC/Yamaha ace Eddie Hicks swept both motos which now gives him 202 points to lead over ~ 22 tough competitors Scott Brown with 182 and Mike Healey at 172. Brown is now the fastest rider on Team Honda and often takes the lead at the start. When the first moto got underway it was Brown in command. Craig Nielsen held a top position until he dropped back. Hicks was on the move and held second place, while looking for a chance to clear . past Brown. The long uphill and downhill are referred to as the "Carlsbad Freeway" and it was on a turn before that section that Hicks swung into first place. Brown was demoted to second place with those two remaining in that order until the checkered came out. Gene Baldwin managed a 'third on his Honda. Healey put his R&D Racing Engines Suzuki in fourth place. Fifth was PJ-l rider Mike Kiedrowski. The amazing 12 year old Shaun Kalos is racing in both the 80cc Expert class and the I25cc Intermediate class. In the final moto Shaun put his Honda ahead of the pack. Healey was in second ahead of Hicks ,and then Robert N,allghton .. On t4t: •. second lap Hicks, in the corner coming out of the Carlsbad Freeway, swooped past Kalos to swipe the lead. Kalos was back in second holding back Healey and Naughton. Healey was taking different lines heading down the freeway in an attempt to pass Kalos, but couldn't. Then with a real surge of speed Brown came from fifth place to pass Naughton, Healey and then Kalas. There was only one rider that Brown couldn't tag and that was Hicks. Through the finish it was Hicks, Brown, Healey, Kalos and Naughton. Hicks and his DMC machine pulled off the fourth straight victory. The only race that Hicks lost was the opener at Saddleback when Healey, who made his debut on a Suzuki, held a slight edge. Brown placed second in both Carlsbad rounds and his consistency earned him second overall. Healey held a 4-3 tally for third overall. Baldwin went 3-7 for the day which gave him fourth. Kiedrowski was fifth with a 5-6. A new Honda is up for grabs between the Veteran and Old Timer Sportsman and Master riders. Former national champ Gary Jones is holding 197 points as the top Veteran Master and has a great chance of winl'\ipg tPilt (l~':Y.bi~~. Toqay Jones faced his rival Jon Miller with Miller taking the top prize. Jones still leads points wise with 197 points over Miller's 185. Miller held the lead with the start of the first moto. Soon, Jones cut past Miller to claim the lead. Randy Lewis dropped his Husky near the score tower and ended his first moto chances. They dynamic duo, Jones and Miller, pulled away from the pack while Alan Olson held off Ken Ratzloff. Both were on Hondas. Mark Smith from nearby Oceanside placed fifth on his home track. Jones took the holeshot in the final moto of the Vet Master class. Miller was after him in second place. Olson tangled with· another rider on the second corner and this set him behind. Around the finish area Miller slid past Jones to take over the lead. Lewis was in third and made a good comeback after the first moto mishap. Ratzloff was in fourth. Then Olson started moving up rapidly and passed both Ratzloff and then Lewis, but Olson couldn't catch the leaders Mil. ler and Jones. Miller took the win over Jones, Olson, Lewis and Ratzloff. Miller took the overall victory with a 2-1 tally. Jones lost the final moto and that cost him the overall. Jones landed second overall with a 1-2 tally. Olson was consistent with a pair of thirds for that overall position. Ratzloff's 4-5 earned him fourth. Fifth was Ron Tuzinsky with a pair' of sixths. Ken Faught is leading the 250cc Novice class in the series with a tally of 192 points. Faught took another win today as he defeated Jeff Montgomery. Montgomery got the jump off the gate with the start of the first mota. On the first corner Faught slid into first place. Faught remained in first place until the second lap. Montgomery regained the lead but then these two started trading the lead back and forth. Montgomery ended up with the win. Faught near the end of the race came close to taking an endo off a huge jump. Faught placed second ahead of Marc Peters "Flyin Part Two." Peters was passed once on the Freeway but regained it to take third. Anthony James landed fourth ahead of Charles Lange. Once again Montgomery took the holeshot in the final mota. This time he overshot the first turn ahd allowed Faught to take the lead. Faught continued and never lost the lead. Peters held a top position until he fell and was used for traction by a 500cc Novice rider. Taking second was Montgomery. James was third over Steve Anthony and Ronald Williams. Results . 600-8: 1. Manley clan terrorizes CRC MX at Saddlebaclf By Lee Taylor IRVINE, CA, FEB. 12 The Manley clan attacked Saddleback Park and took home the bacon. Dad, Bill Manley started the family winning streak by neatly picking off back-toback wins for the Intermediate California Racing Club Vets: holding Dennis McAdam to second both times around. When the 250cc Novices hit the turf for their first molO, Brett Manley was charging! Cheered on by his dad and brother Brian, Manley pushed leader Eugene Borgia to the limit. Suzuki racer, Ted Cordts, in third, had his hands full trying to hold at bay John Jelsma, Tom Baker and a field of race hungry riders. When the moto drew to a close, Borgia led the pack, Manley secure in second and Cordts holding onto third. Cordts blasted off the line for the final round only to find Manley breathing down his jersey. This dastardly duo pushed and shov~_throu~hout the I I-lap molO. Manley shpped a wheel under Cordts to take command, forcing Cordts to fight off Dennis Chafe, Tom Duddey Jr. arid Larry Labrot for the runner-up slot. By the end of II laps more than one racer was up on the pegs fighting the dust and just hanging on. For Manley came the sweet taste of victory. Gordts claimed second-place honors with a super 3-2 ride, and Borgia's 1-9 tally gave him thirdplace honors. American Honda racer, Brian Manley took home the gold in the 250cc Pros the hard way. Beset and beseiged by Jim Tarantino, now riding for Suzuki, and Team Green threat, Todd Campbell, Manley was pushed to outer limits. In the first round, Manley's red-hot machine streaked up the start hill in his first ride of the year for American Honda, leaving behind a tight dice for second between Campbell and Tarantino. Fellow Team Green member, Paul Denis was sizzling in fourth. Manley broke away '!JId wrapped up the mota with no competition in sight. Back on the track, Campbell and Denis pitted their Kawasakis against each other for the secondplace slot. Tarantino dropped from view and had to fight his way up, settling for fourth by moto's end with Jeff Schumacher, Metropolitan Yamaha's entry, rounding out the top five. When the machines came to life for their final encounter, it was Tarantino out in front leading the paek down Webco Hill. Manley had his hands full. Running sixth and having to deal with Campbell, Denis, Schumacher and Jeff Leisk. Tarantino flew down the mountain, putting space between his Suzuki and the pack. Manley needed a third .£<;>1' tbt: moto for the ov,erall ••
