Morgan battles to 250cc Beginner night win at Corona By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, FEB. 3 Yamaha-mounted Art Morgan took the win in the 250cc Beginner class tonight at Corona Raceway by way of his second 20 mow victory over rival Ken Behm (Suz). SP Graphics' Jim Benjamin (Yam) blasted out of the gate and into the lead at the start of the first moto followed by Behm, Morgan and Doug Miller (Yam). Benjamin led for the first two laps before dropping out of the race and handing the lead over to Behm. At the half-way mark, Behm held a comfortable lead ahead of Don Wilborn (BTS/Yam) and SUzuki mounted Jim Williams. Morgan held fourth. Both Williams and Morgan displaced Wilborn a couple of laps later, and heading into the final lap, Morgan moved by Williams for second. Behm's lead shriveled as Morgan, who was on the gas, reeled him in, but Behm held on to narrowly win. Williams was third across the finish line after holding Wilborn at bay. The second-moto start was close as Behm, Benjamin and Morgan raced side by side through the first turn. Benjamin outpowered them both to snatch the lead with Morgan falling in behind for second over Behm. For the first two go-aroimds the trio stayed wheel to wheel, and it wasn't umil the third lap that things began to settle down slightly. Behm dropped back a little and let the other two duke it out for the top spot. Morgan kept the pressure on Benjamin, dropping to the inside but failing to make the pas. His attempt thwarted; Morgan dropped back slightly and seemed coment to let Benjamin go for a couple of laps. But when the white nag came out Morgan was back up to Benjamin's rear fender and this time the pressure paid ofr. Before heading into the hills Benjamin wem down and aU Morgan had to do was cruise to the checkers since Behm was too far behind to make any kind of a challenge. Benjamin's fall dropped him back to eighth. Williams held fourth the emire mota and moved to third on the final lap to secure third overall. Sinisalo/Pomona Valley Kawasaki's Greg Zitterkopf returned to corona and ran off with both of the combined Pro moLOS to top the Open division. Tim Krogh (Han) and Jeff Prieur (Ultimate/Yamaha of Covina) battled to first and second, respectively, in the 250cc division. Results HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN5: 1. Robin Mizobmi (Hem); 2. Wearing a protective knee brace he just received from the doctor, Turk went up against some of the toughest riders CMC has to offer, and beat them all in both motos. Turk played catchup for most of the first moto. He took the lead on the third lap, but missed his line and fell three laps later allowing Craig Cable's Honda and Andy Guth's Yamaha by. By the ninth lap, Turk reeled in Cable, and one lap later got by Guth. Cable continued to fade as the Hondas of Dean Welsh, David Hopwood and Yoshikito Baba of Japan rounded out the top five. Turk jumped into the lead early in the second moto ahead o( Guth, Cable and Welsh. Guth led for a while at the ten-lap mark, but Turk soon retook the lead and held it LO the checkers. Baba nosed out Hopwood for third with Welsh, riding two classes today, holding on to fifth. The '84 season marks the begin· ning of a new clas in CMe. Since each division in CMC is generally faster then its counterpart in other clubs, beginners often lind themselves outclassed even in the Junior class. This year a Novice class has been added for the first-time riders or for the one not up to the J un ior standard yet. It lJIay take a while, though, to separate the Novices from the Juniors; Chris Sparks, on a Kawasaki 125, Henry Corry, on an RM 250, and Alan Kent on his big Yamaha, dominated their respective classes and will probably be racing Juniors shortly. ln the 125cc Intermediate class, John Davis, riding a Yamaha, twice led Honda rider Jeff Matiasevich and the rest of the gang around for double wins. Richard Sands piloted his CR around the track far ahead of the other 500cc class riders in both Pro motos. Craig Cable and Dean Welsh both did better in the 500s than in the 2505, finishing second and third, respectively. Results soo PRO: 1. Richerd Sends (Hon); 2. Creig Cable (Hon); 3.
