Chuck Miller and Kevin Hopkins led the race. but DNF. were !.hought to have taken !.he second overall away from jones/Boyer based on elapsed time. However, further checking found that Malocco's finish time on the California side was misrecorded. A a result he re tarted in Arizona four minutes early. Adjusting the time dropped them to fourth overall. "The whole day went quite well." commented Class 20 winner Morrison, "We were able to change top ends during the downtime. and from !.hen on we had no trouble. It was rough and dusty, !.hough." Class 30 and 38 Classes 30 (over 30) and 38 (over 38) showed the closest racing of the day by far, with Steve Subith and Bill Harris aboard their Honda taking the cheers in Class 30 over Dick Allen and Rick Shirey, also Honda-mounted, by a mere seven seconds. Yes, seconds. Class 38's Richard jackson, aboard his Husqvarna XC500, 50loed to the win despite early pressure from Dave Miller. jackson ran into trouble when he w!ls looking for his pits near Rice on the California side, and when he got in to a choppy section, inj uri ng his ankle -the same one he injured during pre-running. jackson then encountered a flat where Miller picked up the pace and blew by. Miller, on !.he other hand, ran into trouble five miles further down the road with mechanical trouble and jackson regained the lead for good. "I'd like to say thank you to Dan Smith of the famous Ashcraft/Smith team. This is Smith's last year's bike and he helped me get ready for this year," said jackson. • Results CLASS 20: 1.
