Bubba Shobert recovered from a crash the previous night to finish third for Team Honda. Alex jorgensen were 1-2 on the restart, with Gilkey close behind. The big news, though, was who wasn't among the leaders. Harley-Davidson star and crowd favorite jay Springsteen was at the rear of the pack and dropping back quickly. The 38-time National winner completed half a lap, then putted off towards the pits for the evening,. the victim of suspected clutch trouble. . The finishing order for heat three read the arne as the start order: Hames, jorgensen, Gilkey. Houston '84 was not kind to 1979 Astrodome TT winner Mickey Fay. Not only did he crash heavily during the short track, but he managed to unload twice in the fourth TT heat. The first get-off occurred in the first turn when Fay tried to get around leader Bubba Shobert. Fay's front tire appeared to skate for a moment, Fay went down and Jimmy Filice, follow- ingon the inside, was presented with a bike and a body in his path and nowhere to go but down. Filice was up quickly, and to everyone's surprise so was Fay. Shobert hammered into the lead again on the restart, with Filice. last season's Rookie of the (Continued to page 2') 9
