Riding a machine powered by a Honda XL350 engine, canny Cajun Mike Gerald took the win, followed by Dave Hansen and Tom Horton. Hansen then returned for the following night's TT with a Tri.umph twin, and led the National start to finish. Another Triumph rider, Mike Kidd, challenged Hansen for the lead, but in the end was overtaken by defending Grand National Champ Kenny Roberts. New Harley teamster Gary Scott finished fourth.
