Nation, Fish share top billing at Spillway By Jim Pluhar SANTA MARIA, CA, JAN. 21 At the Spillway bi-monthly motocros race today a betterthan-expected turnout of riders competed in cia ses ranging from 80 to 500cc. With a CMC Golden State Series race at Huron Cy Ie Park and Super Bowl Sunday on the tube, it was felt that the turnout might be small. But many of the Sportsmen who competed on Saturday at Huron traveled to Santa Maria for the Sunday events. The only Proat piJlway was Mark Nation, who beat the Intermediates and Juniors in the 250cc division to get his money back. But the rider who shined in the event was the lady from Santa Barbara, Sue Fish, who finished first and second on the day to take first in the 250cc Intermediate class over Peter Dill. Jim Diyorio was. the winner in the 250cc Junior division. In the Mini class Randy Moody was first, Glen 01 on second and Torey third. All of the entries were Mini Juniors. In the I 25cc class John Davis took first twice and Tim Pilg took second twice to top their Junior adversaries. Eddie Guajardo and Brad Toms did the same 10 the I 25cc Intermediates. Ashland's Randy Toreson also put a Honda into the winners circle taking the Open Pro class. With the weather getting better, riders turn d out in hoards, many with new machinery. Ryan Huffman continues to pour-it-on in the Pee Wee Intermediate class. Huffman pulled off his Hooper imitation by running away, convincingly on his Papa Ralph Huffman-sponsored Yamaha; winning both motos over rival Joie DePew (Hon) and Brett Holm, who finished 2-2 and 3-3 respectively. Hooper hooked up for a clean holeshot in molO one of the Pro's eleven-lap bash, gating thirteen riders. "Hoop" led the troops up the sparcely wooded hillside and then down the long national-cal ibre, double-jumped downhill. Rod Huffman hasn't seen much racing for quite some time, but put his Honda inlO second over KTM- upported Rodney KelJer, Honda Support-rider Arne Hettman and de ert star Rick Bozarth (Suz). Up front it was Hooper alone with Huffman, Keller, Kevin White and Bozarth battling for second after Hettman dropped out. Hooper took itall the way 10 home plate with Hu[fman nabbing second after a moto long swapfe t with Keller. White netted fourth, Bozarth fifth, and Yamaha-mounted Jeff Martin sixth. Moto two was nearly a repeat, except for the fact that Keller wa on the gas and rode Hooper' rear wheel while Huffman, White, Open Pro mOIO-winner Randy Toreson, Bozarth and Ben Grable were in hot pursuit of the quickly-disappearing leader. Hooper kicked in an afterburner 10 collect a second-molO win for a I-I with Keller econd and second overall (3-2) over Huffman (2-3), White (4-4) and Bozarth (5-5), 'founding out the pay spots.
