Robert Mason (552) battles for the lead atthe start ofthe 250cc Pro class.. Todd Campbell went home with the class win. Campbell scores dual Pro wins at CRC Anaheim Amateur Supercross By Tom Corley ANAHEIM, CA, JAN. 29 Team Green/Klemm Research-backed Todd Campbell played the high roller in the California Racing Club's Amateur Supercross at Anaheim Stadium. Campbell diced twice and landed the money in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. · h . This nder took a top-molO ft.ntsh In the recent Trans-Cal, and wah the start of today's I25cc Pro race heheld the early lead. The Honda Himalayas was where the lead changed h~nds as Todd Campbell shot past H~nrICksen. It ~as then Campbell, Henncksen. and Mike FI~her from Honda/MaXIma. Soon,. Fisher put the pressure on Henricksen and took away second place. Fisher set out after Camp.bell but didn't get closer than about eIght bikelengths. For this moLO it was _Campbell with the win .. Fisher seuled for second ahead of Henricksen, who alIowed those two riders to squeeze pa t. Coming all the way from Phoenix, Arizona, was Robert Mason who captured fourth. Riding for Yamaha of Goleta Jon Ortner hooked fifth place. Avoiding the difficulty of passing other riders, Campbell took the holeshot in the final moLO of the l25cc Pro class. Maxima rider Terry Fowler took a DNF in the first round but came back swinging in the final. He put his Honda into second place behind Campbell. Then some pressure was being applied by Fisher who succeeded LO make the pass and take second away from Fowler. Campbell -~~ - __ built up a substantial lead and the goingwaseasyforhim. Fisher secured second place over Fowler, Mason and Henricksen. ExceptfoTlhe first lap of the opening round when he trailed Henricksen, Campbell:s performance was flawless. Two ftrsts earned Todd the lOp money prize. Campbell was a top Mini Expert and only has one year of experience in the 125cc Pro class. Mike Fisher was most consistent and held a pair of seconds for that overalI position. Mason made his long trip from Arizona worthwhile as he won the third-place money with a 3-1 LalIy. Henricksen and his holeshot performanceeamed him fourth-place the third-place money. Campbell only has one year's worth of experience in the 125cc Pro class, and less than two months experience in the 250cc Pro class. This did not hinder him from winning either contest. With the stan of the first moLO of 250cc Pro racing it was Ian FitzGibbon taking the holeshot. Campbell was right behind FitzGibbon and chose the Honda Himalayas LO make the pass just like he did in the 125cc Pro first round. Campbell held the lead but didn't have it made as O'Nealrider Zoli Meszaros flew past Campbell on a set of jumps called the Motocross Action plunge. It was a grudge race between Campbell and Meszaros. Campbell became vengeful and zapped Meszaros through the KMET Rockers. From that point on Campbell built upa substantial lead. Meszaros maintained second place. FitzGibbon managed third after allowing both Campbell and Meszaros LO soar past him. Mike Fisher, known as "Mr. Mike," placed fourth. Fifth . Campbell (566) tries to find a way around Zoli Meszaros during the 250cc Pro race. Mike Fisher ended up second while Meszaros took third. was Robert Mason. Fisher was the man lO beat in the final moLO of the 250cc Pro class. Fisher held the lead over Val Tamieui, having "Finally on a Honda" on his pants, with Campbell in third. CampbelI worked past Tamieui over the KMET Rockers to control second place. Todd set out after Fisher and started to gain some yardage when he made a few mistakes. Campbell displayed a (eet·off-the-pegs style of racing and allowed Fisher to increase his lead. Tamietti maintained third place over Meszaros and FitzGibbon. Campbell is certainly a newcomer in the 250cc Pro dass, yet he left with the lOp cash prize. His 1-2 tally did the winning trick. Fisher held a 4-1 hand for second. Meszaros landed third with a 2-4 tally. Fourth was FitzGibbon. Taking the fifth and final cash award was Tamieui. Mark White had a very clean win in the 500cc Pro class. White stayed ahead in both moLOS for an uneventful race. Don Sievenson LOok his Pasadena Honda LO the runner-up spot in both mOlOS. Coming from Tucson, Arizona, was James George who went 4-3 for the day and took third. Dave Foltz placed fourth. There were nine final events after the two moLOS. By this time the lights were fired up and it became a ·night race. The 80cc Stock Beginners had three di visions. The top seven riders from each division met in the final. David Noel placed third in his division one race after winning the first moLO and having a bad second moLO. In the final everything went his way. Noel took the early lead. Charlie Love was in second and displayed his feet-off-the-pegs tyle as he headed over the Miller High Life Mountain. David Wodaszewski held down third place. The positions altered by the end of the race with the exception of first and second that was being held by Noel and Love. Mike McBride advanced LO third. Jason McFarland moved up to fourth. Nick Morgan was fifth. Yamaha held down the top positions with the start of the 80cc SlOck Novice final. Dugan Sanders took the holeshot over Mike Bitner and Erick Hilton. Over the Coca-Cola Catapult, Hilton passed Bimer lO take over second place. Hilton managed to pass the leader Sanders on a turn before the Catapult on the next lap. It was then Hilton, Sanders and Bimer. Kawasaki-mounted Sean Blanchard destroyed the Yamaha rally when he passed Bitner to take over third. Bitner seuled for fourth, with fifth going to Scou Carey. Jody Tapia took the holes hot and led in the I25cc Beginner final. Tapia looked over his shoulder while hauling down the straight going towards the Honda Himalayas and saw the "Flying Ghost" Robert Makimoto moving up. Over the Coca-Cola Catapult, MakimoLO LOok the lead. Through the KMET Rockers Billy Paugh set back Tapia to third place. Around the Dirt Bike Super Berm, Paugh set up MakimoLO and took away the lead. With one lap to go MakimoLO regained the lead as he passed Paugh heading LOwards the Super Berm. It was Makimoto, Paugh, David Hoffman, Greg Shaha and Brian Calhoun. Danny Endres LOok the lead with the start of the 125cc Novice final. Chris Sparks was in second with Gary Lacy in third and eventual' winner Dallen McKenney in fourth. Lacy was on the gas and advanced on the leader Endres. He tried to slide past him through the KHJ-TV Towers but failed and bailed hard. Soon McKenney took over the lead from Endres and Sparks. Then Sparks passed Endres in mid-air over the Miller High Life Mountain. At the finish, it was McKenney, Sparks, Endres, Scott "The Kid" Murphy and John Matia evich. The 125cc Intermediate final saw John Davis and Frankie Brundage get squeezed off LO the side of the track at the Dirt Bike Super Berm. Dennis Parker from Phoenix, Arizona, LOok the lead over a duo of Arizona riders Br an Bruner and then Shaun Kalos. "Wild" William Surrau ran in fourth. These riders held LO their positions and finished that way. Bart Jordan grabbed the lead with the start of the 250cc Beginner final. Aron Briggs cruised in second place. Soon, Briggs took first place away from Jordan, who started to drop back. Briggs continued with the lead over Jerry Sherer, Rich Michalic, Jordan and Tom Baker. Rick Pickering took the lead in the 250cc Novice final. Behind him was Denny Davidow, a top contender in the Golden State Series. While still on the first lap, Davidow swiped the lead away from Pickering. A threeman battle for second place developed. Pickering was pushed back to fourth as Steve Coster LOok second place and Ken DeKoning clinched third. Brett Manley rounded out the top five. Brandon Schneider took the holeshot and the win in the 250cc Intermediate race which was the final event of the night. Steve Piattoni followed in second over Tom Brown.
