TEN YEARS AGO Kawasaki Motors Corporation announced that it wa opening a manufacturing and assembly facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. The facility, which was expected LO employ up LO I000 people and cost $20 million, was to commence production in October. Musical chairs: Peter Lampuu signed to ride with Montesa in the United States, while John Banks and Ossa put ink to paper in a 250cc MXGP Series deal. Marty Tripes was rumored to be riding a Rickman, and road racer Ron Grant hung up his leathers and retired after being a part of the factory Suzuki squad. International trials star Rob Edwards, in the U.S. following America's first international trials event, showed up at Tiger Mountain, Washington, and won an event there by 17 points. Another International rider, John Hemingway, finished econd overall on a 123 Montesa. Top American was fourth-place Arlin Harmond. Manuel Crummett be ted Jerry Kole in a Bultaco-against-Yamaha duel in the 360cc Expert cla s of a Santa Rosa, California, indoor short track. In the 250cc Expert cla s, Ossa rider Steve Eklund took the win. It wasn't unusual for Rick Hocking to win a main event in the continuing series of indoor short track events at the Cow Palace in an Francisco, but for tbe first time, he did it on a four-stroke. Hocking rode a Doug Schwenna-tuned Honda XL350-based machine to take the win over Bultacos of Steve Hernandez and Bob Scally. In the San Bernardino Valley Motorcycle Club's 0-37 figure 8 hare and hound, CZ rider Jim Fishback came from 32nd LO take the overall win. Fellow Open Experts Art Knapp and Terry Davis trailed him in the overall order. Carlsbad found itself host to many of the top professional riders in the southland as CMC held a motocross. Husky-mounted Jim West won the 250cc Pros, LOPPing- Bultaco rider Randy Myers and Honda's Rich Eiersledl. In the I25cc Pro class, Honda's Marly Smith won over teammate Chuck Bower. It was a father-and-son act at a grand prix at Valley Cycle Park in Moorpark, California. Riding a Montesa, Jeff Browning took the 250cc Senior class over Von Pelerson (Cl) and Rich Lansford (Mai). Riding a Maico, his father Cal Browning won the 500cc Junior class. Maico rider Ron Self won both the 250cc and Open Expert classes in a Hayward, California, motocross. In the Open class, Self left the battle for second to be fought by Honda-mounted Brad Lackey and Maico's Mark Blackwell. Lackey took second when Blackwell ONF the final moLO. Remember When?
