Recognizing that the highways of the nation are chock-full of hazards faced only by motorcyclists. the AMA is initiating a program to catalog and offer solutions to specific types of road design and maintenance problems. Obstacles that can threaten motorcyclists but that are rarely noticed by other vehicle owners - puddles of oil at toll booths. gravel in corners. certain types of road surfaces - are the focus of this new program. The Association intends to make street riders aware of these sorts of hazards - without compiling a register of specific potholes on certain routes. To accomplish this. the AMA will be gathering information from government agencies. highway safety experts, highmileage motorcyclists and others. "With our road hazard project, the AMA wants to let riders know what sorts of things to look for," said Government Relations Director Rob Rasor. "But we also intend to let motorcyclists know how they can eliminate or minimize those problems by working with the proper officials. We believe those motorcyclists who are out on the roads of each state are in a better position to identify and tackle specific problems than we here at the AMA." Additional information on the program will appear in an upcoming issue of the AMA's monthly magazine, American Motorcyclist. Further details also are available from the Association at P.O. Box 141, Westerville, OH 43081. On the subject of factory motocross teams and the number of events they will enter in 1984, things are still somewhat in the air. Contacted by phone on Monday, January 29, Honda MX team manager Dave Arnold said. "It is still not known whether or not we will race every Supercross and outdoor National this year. We have a meeting with InS port on Tuesday and we're hoping we can reduce the total number of Supercrosses and Nationals from 32 to 25. If not, the schedule will be too hectic and we will probably have to skip some of the events." Arnold's counterpart at Kawasaki, Roy Turner, said, "At this point all we are committing to is the AMA Nationals and Supercross events - the Grand National Championship. We will compete in as many Supercross events as are necessary to. contend for the title." Honda's Bubba Shoben won the third round of Mike Kidd's Great American Shootout indoor short track series, held] an uary 28 in San Francisco's Cow Palace. Theshort track, as alway, will run first, aturday night in the ·Dome. Il's a whole new ballgame this year with the new rules upping the "limit" to incI ucle 500cc four-strokes. Short tra k is going the opposite direction of TT racing. Remember when all the riders thought they had to race 650s and 750s in order to win a TT? Then somebody discovered that a strong 500 just might do the job and they did. Now one can hardly find a full· ize 750, even though the rule allow for them. By the arne token, there will be many 250 entered for the Houston short track. A change in rules does not always find everybody jumping during the fUH change-over seaSon. A lot depends on the ova I track at Hou ton. If it is damp and mooth It JUSt might favor a 500. If it is dry and spotty, then a proven 250 just might be the ticket to the winner's circle. It adds some extra flavor to this year's first din track National. The TT, on Sunday afternoon once again is somewhat of a new game as well. Many riders who have ra ed both 750s or 500s in recent years may opt for the newer 600cc version of some brands. The500s took 12 of the 15 places in Houston's IT main event last year, (Continued to page 9) Please send a trial sample of T/5 toilet chemical to: Name _ Address _ City State Zip . _ Charge your Cycle News subscription with your Visa or MasterCard!!
