Eddie Michetti stu[fed his '84 Honda through the first turn ahead of uzuki Country's David Williams and today' lone Open Pro, Tim Cauby (Yam). Nash was in a three-way dice for third with Spectro' Marty Miller (Hon)and Montclair Yamaha'sKeith Williamson. By the third lap, it looked like Michetti and Williams were going to run away with it, when Cauby sudddenly decided he would reel the 250s in down a fast straight. nfonunately for Cauby. he couldn't haul his 490 down LO a sane turning peed and plowed through the in ide line. planting himself right in front of Williams, who went down hard and was on hi way home before the moto ended. Nash was clearlv on the war path, a he had left Miiler and William on behind and set his ight on Michetti. who wa beginnin to fade after leading everyone for eight lap. ash got by Michetti on lap ten and rode the moLO out in mooth, consistant form. Michetti held on LO second, while Miller made a daring la t-Iap pass on Williamson for third. Michetti grabbed another holeshot In moLO two, with Mill.er and Cauby arguing over second. Nash decided LO make things hard on himself by getting a last-place stan, but worked his way up to fourth behind Williamson by the end of the first lap. Miller was on the gas this moLO and wasn't giving Michetti a moment rest. Nash spent the first half of the moto dodging rocks and din clods coming from Cauby's 490. Miller took over first on lap eight, and it looked as if his moLO win was in the bag. One lap later, ash took second away from Michetti and spent the next three laps reeling in Miller. At this point, Nash didn't need to pass Miller, because his 1-2 score would heat Miller's 3-1, but Nash showed no modesty and pa ed Miller with three laps LO go. Miller's 3-2 gave him second over Michetti's 2-3, while a 4-4 put Williamson in fourth. Results 14 PEE WEE: 1. Lee Ford (Vam); 2. Billy Vaiko (yam); 3. Troy Maling (Yaml. DIV 3: 1. Lee Ford (Vam); 2. A sure win for Shennak at Corona By Nate Rauba CORO A, CA, JAN. 13 What was supposed to be just a fun, leisurely ride to break in a new bike turned out to payoff for Brent hermak when he finished on top of the 250cc Pros LOnight at Corona Raceway. Anaheim Suzuki's Chris Fleming pulled the holes hot in the fir t moLO only to climb up and over the outside berm in the fir t turn. Circle City Honda/Spectro Oil' Many Miller inherited the lead, followed by hermak (Hon), Open Pro winner Jeff .Walters and Fleming. By the second lap, Flemingwas next to Wallers and on hermak's rear fender, who, in turn, was pressuring Miller for fir t. A half-lap later, hermak snuck imo the lead. As they went up the long hill, Miller made a mistake that allowed Fleming to move by into second. For the next two laps, Fleming put some heavy pressure on Shermak but couldn't find a way by. When Fleming finally took the lead, it wasn't for long. After gaining a small cushion over Shermak, Fleming got out of shape and went 0[[ the track in the stadium whoops two laps from the end, allowing the Honda pilot to slip back into the lead. A the white Oag came out, Fleming wa right behind hermak and going for L!,e lead, but Shermak came out of the hills alone and cruised to thewin. Fleming came around with bent bars and a brown shoulder, finishing third behind C&H Kawasaki's Gerry Lauimer. "I wasn't really even trying," said Shermak afterwards. "I even let him (Fleming) by once." Fleming added, "I bumped and yelled and he moved over, but on the la t lap when I bumped him I went down." Fleming grabbed the lead at the start of the second moLO, this time staying on the track through the first turn. Walters followed in second with Shermak trailing in lhird. By the third lap, Fleming built a good-sized lead and looked to be the sure winner. Shermak and Lauimer were ahead of Walters and bauling over second, but they were far behind Fleming. With twO laps remaining, Fleming came to the uphill jump and hit it wrong, -swapping sideways in the air and th~n going off the track and crashing. HIGH SCHOOL WOMENS: 1 Robin Mizokami (Heml; 2. Best, Shoemaker shine at Indian Dunes By Lee Taylor Photo by Greg Taylor VALENCIA, CA, JAN. 15 It was a day of new beginnings for Pro racer Donnie Best and Mike Shoemaker. Best, out of action for nearly a year, rode his hean out in both 125cc and 250cc race. Picking up a clean 2-2 ride in the I25cc class and rounding out the. top three for the 250cc race. In the 25Occ' first round. Be t showed spectaLOrs the stu[f champions are made of - coming ba k from a last place LO fourth after a dead-engine start. Mike Shoemaker, away from the track for over eight momhs with injuries, mounted Donnie Hansen's stock Yamaha and rode like the wind! Clearly in control throughout both moLOS of the 250cc Pro contest; "The Shoe", with no competition in sight, breezed on home and into the Winner's Circle. Rounding out the top three, 250cc Pros was Suzuki-rider Andy Seagle; gathering second place loot for a 3-2 ride and Yamaha-mounted Best of Van Nuys Cycle laking home thirdplace money. All three men, head for Anaheim Stadium. I25cc Pro honors wentlo Yamaharider Doug Gentry with a pair of winning aces. Best took home seI - .. _- cond-place money and claiming third overall honors was Honda-ace, Zoli Me zaro with a 4-4 ride. The Open Pros, though few in number, set the track on fire with International Yamaha's Mark White claiming ba k-LO-back wins and Dave Foltz, aboard a Honda, claimed the runnerup position. Hoards of Beginners in every class ran rampant over the International Track. Perhaps the most notorious wa Division·Oneofthe I25cc Beginners. Brian Werle, on a Kawa aki, imply out-raced and out-maneuvered everyone and everything in sight throughout both moLOS for back-toback win. The First time out of the gate, Werle and Honda-rider Mike Bova were locked into an incredible duel. Dicing tooth and nail, until Bova slipped a wheel under Werle for command only LO bailout of the running. By moLOS end, fellow Kawasaki racer, Greg Peria was riding sholgun and held firm. Taking the checkers in third was Luiz Henrique Paret, aboard a Honda for Motoverde Brothers. When the pack blitzed off the line for their final round of action, Werle led the way. With Peria once more breathing down his jersey tbe two leaders left behind an angry freight train ,that over-shot every berm in sight and dove into the "Fish Bowl" four and five abreast. When the du t of baule had cleared, Werle took home the rose. Peria picked off a smooth 2-2 ride for second place gold and Honda-mounted Mike mith emerged outof chao and into third overall.
