Lucerne Valley - Red Mounbln - Plaster City - SNrCh.....t - Sidewinder Road Southern California·Arizona·Southern Ne.ada. In ovember Mark Wiechmann lost the Iron Hor e Enduro overall win to Scott Sampson by 12 seconds, but the 1984 More in '84: Smith takes Desert M.C. H&H California Racing Club sea on taTted off on a positive note for Wiechmann. The tables were turned when Wiechmann picked up the overall at the Frosty Desert Enduro. Wiechmann's score of 2.166 was the only under three points with, Sampson second at 3.169 after the three-loop, 94-mileevent. Two-loop winner Chris Dubowski pu.lled a similar feat as the only rider to score in the ones with Scott Wally Nairn placing second overall with a score of 2.45. Jeff Day had his hands full by taking the overall honors for the one-loop riders and just beating number one mini Scott Jacosen. After an easy first loop, loop two started off with a little spice, shooting directly up a rock-strewn uphill and then under the tracks for 30 mph flat fireroading. The special test was a little different at this race; the riders were not thrown into a moon rock section but one more of narrow trail with a cliff on one side which slowed many riders. A well-deserved reset helped, and then it was a direct shot back LO camp hoping to be at least 15 minutes early to the known check. This was probably the most demanding special test CRC has ever mustered up! Almost six miles at36 mph over mind-bo~gling terrain, then the riders were dropped in a six-mph section that was a downright rocky stairstep waterfall area that had everyone puzzled. After that it was 24 mph back to home base, endin~ one of the best enduros. LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, JAN. 22 Results 12 250 AA: 1. Scott Sempson: 2. E_ett Anglo; 3. Bill Fulmer Jr. 250 AA-4ST: 1. By Shirley Upp Averaging over 43 mph, Husky's Dan Smith took the overall win in the Desert M.C.'s Charlie Goodban Memorial Hare and Hound. This race was in memory of Charlie Goodban, one of our top Senior riders who was 10 tlast year to cancer. After the banner dropped Kevin Hopkins took tl}e lead over Ted Hunnicutt a mile past the bomb. Smith's bike started on kick one but bogged . down, giving the advantage to Hopkins and Hunnicutton the bomb run as Smith came by third. Leading the 250cc class was Ed Ogden at fourth. In the Novice race Robert Wethgrn led with Senior Beginner Hal Bankhead second. After 65.6 kilometer Hopkins still led Hunnicutt and Smith by seconds. Chuck Miller had moved his big Honda thumper up LO fourth with Larry Roese\er now leading the 250cc class at fifth. Ken Upp was sixth after getting by Dave Chase and Chris Crandall, but with a blown fork seal and no suspension he called it quits. Dan Ashcraft had a bad get-off put him out of the race. In the Novice race Wethgrn was still leading but would oon beoutof the race with problems. Lonnie Lawrence took the lead after check seven and came in LO take the overall Novice win for Apple Valley Cycle Alley. After one hour, 52 minutes and 30 seconds, Smith once again pulled his Husky in for the overall win. Hopkins took the second for American Honda and Answer Products. ''I'm out of shape, " said Hopkins, "but it was sure nice to be out in the lead with no dust." Hunnicutt pulled in for a third, followed by Miller, first 250cc c1asser Roeseler and Crandall. (Above) Jeff "Wafer" Schaeffer topped the 125cc Intermediate class at Corona. (Below) At Carlsbad. "Robot" Rodgers aced the 500c Pro class. Tamiefti tops Pros at Carlsbad By Kenneth Stein CARLSBAD, CA, JAN. 22 Honda-mounted "Robot" Rodgers started his racing day off on the wrong foot today at Continental Motorsport Club's Pro-points race at Carlsbad, but pulled it all together for a successful day. Rodgers picked the start of the first 250cc Pro moLO as the time to forget that the course was being run backwards today. "I had the holeshot and started to make the turn," Rodgers explained. "I saw everyone else going outside and thought they were all going to overshoot the turn. As I started turning, someone tapped my rear wheel and I went down." That move took several riders down with him. Honda of Pomona's Val Tamietti led the pack out of the turn and was never threatened. Rodgers worked back up through the pack before bailing again and settling for fifth. Michael McGowen, Crain Cable and Richard Mannshreck trailed Tamietti home for a Honda sweep. Having regained his bearings, Robot led the entire first 500cc Pro moLO, surviving incidents such as his buddies flashing him a blank pit board. "Nothing to say," was their explanation. Richard Long trailed Rodgers in for second. Tamietti holeshot the 250cc Pro finale with Rodgers right on his fender. They looked like siamese twins join.ed at the motorcycle for half the race, until Rodgers started tiring. "He's just too good a rider," Rodger admilled. "You can't wait for him LO makea mistake because he doesn't make any. I kept thinking I've got another race to go." That, Tamietti joked, was the plan. "I wanted to tire him out." Robot led all the way home in his last race, putting a sizeable chunk of Carlsbad acreage between himself and the others. Long caught Yamaharider Scott Slayton for second late in the race, but that was all he could do. Results 500 PRO: 1. Robot Rodgers (Hon); 2. Jeff Long (Hon); 3. Scott Sleyton (Yom). 250 PRO: 1.
