TEN YEARS AGO ~ 00 ....... In a tragic accident shonly before the end of 1973, road racing star Cal Rayborn was killed in a crash in ew Zealand. Rayborn, who had captured world-wide attention for stellar performances on an underpowered Harley-Davidson, had signed with Suzuki just two days before his accident. America's first international observed trials event was held at Saddleback Park in southern California. Monsoon rains complicated the running of the event, however, creating huge bottlenecks as some sections became unrideable. Bullaco-mounted Alan Lampkin was pronounced the winner of the event, but several protests were filed by riders who had better observed scores, but had houred out because of the bottlenecks. It was a BullacO sweep of the first four places, with Malcolm Rathrnell, Yrjo Vesterinen, and Charles CoUlard finishing behind Lampkin. California rider Steve Graham finished top Am rican at eighth. Husky riders Art Knapp and Heath Hibbard led the way in Expen-class action of a Desen Racing Association event near California City. Yamaha rider Mark Zoller bested the combined Novice classes. In the continuing series of indoor shon track events at San Francisco's Cow Palance, Rick Hocking claimed the main event win on a Yamaha. Second and third went to BullacO riders AI Kenyon and Dave Lewis. Steve Eklund, a relative newcomer to the indoor shon track scene, qualified fastest and won the trophy dash on an Os a. In the main event, however, Eklund could do no better than eighth. Diane Cox, 17, became the AMA's first licensed woman Class C Junior competitor. Mike Hartwig joined Pierre Karsmakers and Tim Hart on the Yamaha factory motocross squad. Kawasaki, on the other hand, reduced its involvement to only one rider, Jimmy Weinert. Rick Shirey piloted a big Yamaha to the Open Expen win of an NRA grand prix event at Indian Dunes. Finishing top 250cc Novice on the same day was Honda rider Dave Arnold. In results published on the final point standings, Larry Roeseler had the number one plate in the District 37 Trailbike desen division, trailed by Mike Cartledge and Bruce Ogilvie. In the Lightweight Division I (250cc) standings, it was Mark Adent first, followed by Doug Winchell and Jim Fishback. Torn Brooks grabbed numer one in Lightweight Division II (I 75cc). with Scott Hayslip and Andy Kirker finishing second and third. 5
