:Oathern Caillornla.Arl.ona·S diate and Pro riders. Top Intermediate-rider Billy Frank didn't make it to the starting line a his Yamaha seized during practice. Frank was not the only competitor who was shot down this way. Shaun Kalas from Litchfield Park, Ariz. would be considered by most to be too small to ride a 125, yet he surprised the combined pack as he mounted aboard a Honda 125 with repositioned pegs. Kalas rode like a Pro and led not only his Intermediate class but the Pro riders which included Larry Brooks. Unfortunately, the Honda of Kalas seized and he was forced to push it back. With Kalas out of the running it was the Honda of Brooks that led the way and took the Pro victory over Ken "KC" Campbell. "Wild" Willie Surratt pulled off the Intermediate victory over Jeff Segale and Jeff Reynolds. The top 80cc Expert rider Reynolds was new to the 125cc lineup just like Kalas, though Reynolds appeared tall enough [or the larger machine. Right behind those Intermediates came the Novice class which was headed by Steve Kendall over Bill Waitman and George Vlach. The Junior Cycle Stock class was almost a total Kawasaki af£air with nine out of the 12 riders on green machines. Early Bird Racing USA riders were right on top from the start with Buddy Antunez and Richard Saxton taking the top spots. Saxton, aboard his Kawasaki of Las Vegas bike, would start to gain on Antunez but dropped back slightly. Antunez took the clean win over Saxton, who just recently switched to Kawasaki after being a Yamaha rider for years. The other ballie that took place was between John Shaver and Jesse "The Bandit" James. Third place went to James who prevailed over Shaver. James had several impressive finishes in Grand Prix racing throughout the month as he won the Chuck E. Cheese and the Merry Christmas Grand Prix at this park. Jimmy "Monkey" Button rode the sale Honda against a pack of Kawasaki riders in the Junior Cycle Modified contest. Seizing was not Button's problem but instead he had trouble with the deep, sandy turns. Jimmy held the lead until his front wheel sunk in the sand and he dropped his bike. Richard Saxton plowed by him to take over the lead. Jesse James was then in second place. James started to battle with Saxton but dropped back. Button fell once again on the same sandy corner. By the end of the race, Saxton held a secure lead. Button moved up to second place with James dropping back to third. • Results PEE WEE: 1. Michael Gilbert (Vam); 2. Pablo lara (Suz); 3.
