Suzu ki o f R iverside's R a ben Cadwe ll smoked th e co mpetition to the first tu rn in th e fir st mo ta aboard his '84 RMI 25, Ro ost Factory's J a y Birm in gham (Suz) a nd Yamaha -m o un ted Dean Keeling were figh ting over second pl ace until th e seco nd la p wh en Don ald Feeley (Suz) iru erupr ed th ei r battle by tak ing o ver third for himself. On th e thi rd la p , Ca dwell went down but rem ounted in foun h behind Fee ley , Birmin gha m , a nd wall s , w ho h a d wor ked hi s way th roug h the pack a fter a poor first turn showing. Feeley co ntinued 10 lead through th e fifth lap when an unstoppa ble Walls took th e lead. By th e third la p , Walls slipped by Cadwell for first wh i le Bi r m i n g h a m was p lay i ng catch -u p due to a poor sian. Cadwell bobbled o n la p five, wh ich allowed Birm in gham to take over second. Keelin g took fu ll ad va ntage o f Cadwell 's slip up by pressuring and eventually passing th e Suzuki pi lot on th e six th la p . Walls cruised to an easy win (co m pared to h is first moto ), Birm in gham was second , whi le Keel ing's lat e mor o charge put him in th ird. Wall s landed firs t wi th h is. It may hav e b een the Mer ry Ch ristmas Gra nd P rix , bu t nobody was giving any thi ng away on th e track . T he 125's gal off in a bu nch . T he start was very lo n g , a ll so ft s.a nd and flat o u t fast. As the fir st wave d isapp eared u p th e was h , Ma rk Stue n h ad a slig h t edge with h is 200 a nd was ba rel y in the lead, In a pack behind h im were Cun Fa rrar, Willi am Surratt and Jerr Spencer. Spencer passed Surra tt o n the next lap a nd took th e lead in la p two. Surratt stayed w ith him a nd had closed 10 w ith in inc hes by mid-race. T hey were th en in th e midst o f la p ped ri ders a nd Spe ncer made good use o f th e traffir to put some ai r between him a nd Surra tt. At th e end o f th e race, S pe ncer had a t least fif teen seco nds over Surra tt. Farrar had hu ng in th ere w ith the lead ers a nd fini sh ed third . With a lmos t fift y riders, keep in g track o f th e 250's was like co unting a nts at a pi cni c. T he lead ers were easy to spot, th ou gh. Intermedi at es Gl en Wells, M ichael Vrchota , Ron L ew is, a n d Don Coeu li ng were elbow to el bo w co m ing o u t o f th e wash a nd o nto the Intern ational track. Evere tt Nea l, Kr is W ilcox, a nd Bob Carney toppe d the Nov ices a nd Krabs Krull h ad a remarkable lea d over the res t o f th e Begi nn ers. In th e 12S's, Brand j ohnson took th e lead in th e Iirs t lap a nd just m otored awa y wi th th e win .
