Three Sierra Club members picketed the Bureau of Land Management's information trailer near the start of the recent Barstow to Vegas hare and hound. When it became clear that they were being ignored, the three left. They left without their picket signs, which read "Motorcycle Racers Go Home" and so on. The signs were just thrown on the ground, and more than one photographer got pictures of the trash. Papa is Left to assume that the Sierra CLub thinks racing motorcycles in the desert is an evil thing, but littering is A-OK. Papa also visited the site of the race's NEWl -, 2 first gas pit, Razor Road, and could find no trace of recent litter. We've learned that Wes Cooley will be back on Suzuki for the 1984 Superbike season. Cooley will ride a Voshimura-sponsored bike in Superbike competition only- no F-1 . We've also heard that New Zealand star Graeme Crosby 'will team with Cooley for Daytona. Road racer Dave Aldana will be the guest on the December II radio version of Motorcycle World with Larry Huffman. The show is broadcast from 9-11 p.m. in southern California on KNEWS 1190 AM. The AMA has announced the National dirt track and road race numbers for 1984. On the dirt track side, Randy Goss, of course, has the number one plate, while 1982 Champ Ricky Graham picked number three. Kenny Roberts is still listed as number two and Bart Markel, National Champion in 1962, '65 and '66 is on the books again with numberfour. Gary Scott retains number five. Recently retired Mike Kidd's number seven is still his, whilenumber six is vacant. Number eight is Steve Eklund's, Jay Springsteen has the now-familiar number nine and Rookie of the Vear Doug Chandler is number 1 O. We'll print a complete rundown of the numbers in a future issue, so have your scorecards ready. The American Motorcyclist Association, having assumed administration of the Help 'N Hands rider assistance program in August, has announced that the program has been renamed International Help 'N Hands to better re[)ect its scope and [0 acknowledge the support it receives from the Canadian Motorcycle Association. International Help 'N Hands is a network of riders who stand ready to help fellow motorcyclists in distress. Members volunteer to be listed in a directory, indexed by phone number and city only. The American Motorcyclist Association has announced the formation of a new road race program for 1984 entitled the AMA Championship Cup Series. According to the AMA, the new series will be of national-championship stature and is designed to fill the gap between grass roots amateur competition and the AMA's presitgious Camel Pro Series. The AMA Championship Cup Series will be run on a regional basis and will culminate in a Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway in October. All AMA Pro license holders, as well as competition members of WERA, AAMRR, AFM, FGPRA, CRRC, CRA, MRA and other road racing clubs may apply for a Championship Cup Series license. AMA membership will be required. In addition to an independent schedule of races, Championship Cup Series classes will be run at select AMA Pro-am events in 1984. Initially, Championship Cup Series races are planned only east of the Missi88ippi River, but expansion is planned in subsequent ",80ns. Roger Edmondson, former director of pro- motions with WERA, will direct the new program on behalf of the AMA. There's a note elsewhere on this page about some of the new National numbers for AMA Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series, and we forgot to mention one noteworthy thing. National number 57 now belongs to Tammy Kirk of· Dalton, Georgia; the first woman to hold such a number. B While the outdoor National MX situation remains unsettled, we''t8 heard reports that some prog.... is being made. Ted Moorawood, promoter of the Saddleback National MX, said, "I had a telephone conversation with Wayne Moulton this morning (December 5) and a~ a result, I feel a lot better than I di last week. Wayne said he woul try and get the rest of the outdoor promoters together, possibly in Las Vegas. The main thing is that the promoters have to have control of their own destinies." The GNC folks held their Texas State MX Championship at Lake Whitney on the December 3-4 week· end, and over 500 riders took part. Honda rider Eddie Vreeland won the Mini Senior class, Carroll Richard son won the 125cc Expert laurels on a Kawasaki, Jerry Serber Jr. rode a Honda to the 250cc Expert win, and the Open Expert class fell to Yama ha-mounted Ron Dunfee. A reminder: Following the publication of issue number 50, the Cycle New. advertising, production and editorial departments will be taking their annual vacation. They'll be gone from December 20 through January 4, 1984. The circulation and bookkeeping departments will stick around to handle any Christmas subs or financial matters. "I turned down Honda's offer," said short track/TT specialist Mickey Fay in explaining why he was no longer part of Honda's dirt track effort. ''I'll be riding Can-Ams next year, and I may be riding for Tex Peel, or Ron Wood."
