Photos by Lori Tyson and David Edwards. ) Abolish Coastal Commission California Governor Duekmejian made it clear to the voters that it was his intentto abolish the Coastal Commission. On the surface that may raise a few eyebrows, so let's look under the surface: The Coastal Commission is to blame for the campsite limitation at Pismo Beach. They are also to blame for the fencing at Pismo, along with the barrier which is going to be constructed at Oso Flaco Creek to keep vehicles from driving down the beach south of the creek. The Green Sticker Fund owns a large parcel of property south of Oso Flaco Creek. _That property, 2,000 acres south of the creek, will be made unusable by the construction of a fence, They have further restricted use from Pier Avenue south to Mile POSt Two. That area is for street-legal vehicles only. We have responded by making dozens of street-legal threewheelers. The Coastal Commission has played a part in limiting vehicular access to the Guadalupe/Nipomo Dunes as well as requiring a "dune stabilization project" which is to be paid for by our Green Sticker Fund. That project was originally budgeted for over $2.4 million. The Coastal Commission has not done us any favors. They have done their best to make our life as miserable as possible. It is time to let Governor Duekmejian know that we support his efforts to disban the Coastal Commission and would oppose any . move by any faction to recreate under some form of new legislation. Let the Governor and your local state legislator know your feelings on the Caostal Commission. Our hope for their demise can only move forward by let- ~ing your legislator know your feellOgs. (Name and address withheld by request.) The F-2 Champ says... RANDY RENFROW Falmouth, VA Baja acknowledgments We would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the sponsors that made not only our Class 30 win at the SCORE Baja 1000, butalsoour overall Class 30 Otampionship, possible. Without the help and support of Honda of Gardena, Spectro Oils, O'Neal USA and A &: B Floor Covering, our entire effort would not have been possible. Our thanks must also go to Markers; Max, Clarice, David and Jan, Ron Treat, the guys from MAG 7 and Norma and Stacy Prickeu. BOB PRICKETT &: TODD MARTELLA Gardena, CA In praise of Honda Vo-Tech The Honda Vo-Tech five-day training classes which staned in 1980 for high school teachers and instructors of rommunity rolleges and vocational centers bas helped expand motorcycle training throughout the United States. The program has been so successful that instructors have traveled from as far as Okinawa, Japan, to attend classes at Honda's Training Center in Los An~e1es. Those of us Thanks Pat This morning I was riding through Berkeley on my way to work when I noticed that my Honda was in need of maintenance: After stal1ing at a light and putting up with generally sluggish performance, I madea mental note to do a tune up and sync the carburetors. Then a thought hit me. How do I know to do all of this? I learned it at L.A. Trade Tech. It has been 10 years since I entered the Motorcycle Repair program at Trade Tech, with a love of motorcycles and a total lack of knowledge about what made them run. In two years, Pat Owens and his excellent crew of instructors had managed to instill enough motorcycle know-how in me that I was hired by a major shop the day after I graduated. After six years in the industry I moved on to other fields, but the knowledge stayed with me, as did the love of motorcycles. What am I trying to say here? I guess that it's time that more of us stepped up and thanked Pat Owens and L.A. Trade Tech for the incredible amount of work and effort they put into making our sport all that it can be, I think we are all too willing to let a few people do the work while we sit back and reap the benefits. The list of Trade Tech grads that have gone on to do fine work in all aspects of the industry is legion. All of us need to stop what we are doing long enough to say "thanks PaL." RICK HOLTZMAN San Francisco, CA To those who cared .. , A sincere thank you on behalf of the IS DE Support Fund, Inc. to each and everyone of you who contributed to the 1983 fund. It becomes more expensive each year to send the team to Six Days and without your loyal support it would become impossible. With 1983 behind us,let'sjumpon the bandwagon for 1984 with even more enthusiasm as we head for HoIland - to win! The a ui tude of support people was the greatest ever this year. We're glad to have each of you aboard the U.S.A. Support Team. . Be watching for our ad for t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. for '84. They should be available soon after the first of the year. Again, thanks to everyone who helped. DICK & JOYCE FRANCE ISDE Support Fund, Inc. Fairmount, IL Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News, Inc.
