MARYSVILLE, CA, OCT. 30
Anyone who spectated in the
rather muddy occasion that took
place at the Marysville motocross Sunday saw a very vivid
display of mud, sweat, and gears as riders battled Mother Nature in a whirlwind of excitemenL Yamaha-moun·
ted, MX Fox-sponsored DonnieCanta-·
loupi handled the conditions well as
he won both the 125 and Open Pro
classes with fiying colors.
Cory Cantaloupi jumped his Yamaha inLO the front of the I 25cc Pro
class at the start of the race with a big
holeshot and continued to lead the
entire fustlap before being overtaken
by brother Donnie, and later by local
"Whiz Kid" Greg Michalec, on a
Suzuki, and Steve "Leaping Leprechaun" Vlahos, whose Honda has
helped pull him into a LOp-point
standing position in with District 36.
The battle continued with Hi-Point
sponsored, Kawasaki-mounted Rodney "Hot Shot" Harriger holding on
LO a strong fifth and Chalma Roberts,
m~ng a comeback after a three-year
pause from racing, close behind. At
the finish line it was Donnie, Michalec, Vlahos, Cory, and Harrigerdominating the top five positions.
Round twO of the 125s showed littie change as Donniequiekly grabbed
a holeshot and held on to it - only
this time it was Vlahos giving the
leader a ride for his money. Roberts
and Cory were making some tough
impositions on Vlahos after he fell in
the second lap. The latter three played
switchies for the remainder of the
race, and Harriger, suffering from a
bad start, was gaining on them. A
shock was in store at the finish line
after Donnie cruised by in first. Cory
was in second and Vlahos was fiying
up to make a move that was later
described by Cory as, "It was like he
used me as a berm." The resulting
change in positions gave second LO
Vlahos and inches later a third to
Cory. RobertS, having fallen on the
fifth lap, came around in fourth and
Harriger held on LO fifth, taking time
out to play in mud along the way.
Overall it was the Cantaloupi brothers in first.
