Light ROSEBURG, OR, NOV. 13 The weather has taken a drastic downturn-in the northwest, but in round two of the Clarks Branch AMA Winter Series, Eugene's Mark SlipR didn't let the dampness bother him as he sloshed his way around the 1.5-mile course for 18 laps to ace both l25ccIntermediates motos, a fraction off the pace of lone l25cc Pro Steve Nelson. Chad Clingbeil put his Yamaha into the hunt and came up with a 2-2 in a valiant effort. Like previous races, the Old Timers have been turning out in great numbers. One rider has been dominating all season in southern Oregon and that rider happens to be David Weleber, who outclasses the competition week after weeR. This week he did get a run for the brass from long-time Pro Rick Smith, who has turned of age and races with the "old men" as well as mixing it up with the Pros. Smith knows Clarks Branch like the back of his hand, dominating the area for years until the Larry Roopers and Rodney Kellers came along. Smith and Weleber had it out for nine grueling laps in the drizzle, but Weleber seemed to. hold the advantage with a 500 Husky vs. a 125 Yamaha. Smith did take over on lap six, but from there to the checkers it was Weleber, with John Broadwater pushing his 465 Yamaha into third at the finish. Moto two had Weleber and Smith again fight it out as the skies looked . to bring precipitation. Smith didn't have a chance this time and Weleber prevailed, winning both motos over a determined but underpowered Smith, who went 2-2. Broadwater took a 3-3, 'lJlaII hero Joey Schlag had his own problems. Schlag arrived late, missing practice, and missed the start of his race alsol He blitzed through the mud to catch up to the pack and finished fifth, but in moto two he lost his grip on the starting line.·Flores' 125 did an excellent job of holding orr the bigger bike of Schlag and his.f1ying raincoat. Schlag did win the second moto and the Open class, but the overall went to Randy Collins, who rode steady "nofall" races for a first and second. Results BO EX: 1. Terry Bostard (Yem). BO INT: 1.
