700 Riders invade
San Diego for CRe
Amateur Supercross
By Tom Corley
SAN DIEGO, CA. NOV. 6
In the event that announcer Larry Huffman
referred to as " ...crash and burn day," close
to 700 riders tackled San Diego's Jack Murphy
Stadium for the California Racing Club's
Amateur Supercross. The challenging Supercross track that
was designed by Stadium Motorsports Corporation, with the

factory Pro in mind, was tamed down
to accomodate the amateurs. The dietCoke Launching Pad was eliminated,
a \though the Honda Himalayas
proved to be the downfall·of those
brave enough to double the final two
jumps, besides adding spectator appeal for those in the grandstands.
The 46 scheduled events plus the
finals came to an end by 6:30 p.m.
and most considered it to be a successful " ...crash and burn day."
The classes had so many participants that up to four divisions were
required. This made it necessary to
have final events which were held
after the scheduled 46 classes. Points
were not. carried from the divisions
and th_e (inal event was.a winner-
take-all deal.
Lancaster Yamaha rider Doug Huston could be considered the most successful rider of the day as he chalked
up two wins, both the 80cc Modified
Stock Beginner contests. The best
from three divisions of 80cc Stock
Beginners lined-up against the gate.
Huston took a 2-1 tally in his two
motos a~ainst the second division
into the fmal and took a decisive win,
leading the pack by a longshot. At a
distance behind Huston charged Charlie Love on his I,.ove's Towing Suzuki.
Love was confident of his secondplace position and while flying over
the Miller High Life Mountain he
would do a one-hander. A distance
was the third placer, David Carbajal.
The 80cc Modified Beginner class
didn't have a final event because
there were only four riders and Huston outsl)i,n.ed.the group with .t~o

Coming all the way from Pboenix,
Arizona, was Jimmy Button. who has
gained a measure of success with a
Honda Support ride. Button is also
supported by PJl and Answer Products and he won the 80cc Stock
Novice final. Button posted an inconsistent 15·1 tally in his second division race, where Darren Sanford was
the winner. When the final got underway it was Sean Blanchard on top
aboard his Kawasaki. Blanchard held
back Button for one lap but then the
lead changed hands. When right after
the Honda Himalayas, Button took
an inside line and slid past Blanchard. Through the finish line it was
Button and Blanchard. Craig Miller,
the overall winner of the 80cc Novice
class in the Trans-Cal was third in
tbis event. Richard Bates placed
fourth. Sanford rounded out the top
five.
The Matiasevich family had three
riders entered in the day's racing. Jeff
was a top contender in the 125cc
Novice class. Jim raced in the 125cc
Intermediate class. Then there was
John who became the most successful as he won the 125 Beginner final.
Riding for Tustin Honda, Matiasevich did well from the start and
placed second in his second division
race. David Graff won that contest
with a final-moto win. Four divisions
met in the final. Right away David
Salinas took his Honda out to the
lead. Robert Makimoto was in second,
Albert Hazeltine third and Matiasevich was running in fourth. As the
riders cleared the Honda Himalayas,
Matiasevich advanced all the way to
first place. No sooner did Matiasevich take the lead when he bailed over
a set of jumps, letting Salinas regain
