Cent..al Pipeline /Kasson king of Austin Vets By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, ocr. 30 Ageless Bill Kasson, knocked down and left behind in what many called a deliberate act of aggression, rose from the mud with fire in his eyes and proceeded to catch and thrash his tormentors soundin the second moto of the Over 30 Expert clash today at Austin Moto Sport Park. Kasson, captain and spiritual leader of the renowned Kasson Yamaha Racing Team, was sent tumbling to the. LUrf on lap four of a six-lap race after a crowded first-turn confrontation had forced him to play catch-up for most of the heal. Since he had won the initial round going away, Kasson was confident of overtaking the last two obstacles in his path when he was unceremoniously struck down. ('I went by Smokey Joe like he was tied to a post, but I wasn't so lucky \ with what's his name (Lester Munson). He put me down. I got up as quick as I could but I was afraid I wouldn't have time to catch 'em again," Kasson stated after the race. Kasson had plenty of time, as it turned out, putting Frank Peebles away with half a lap remaining. A remarkable performance by a.proven veteran of the motocross wars of the past 14 years. Munson still managed to get a first place in the Over 30 Intermediate division, which wascombined but scored separately. Bob Goldade and Lloyd Longmire rounded o.ut the top three in that class. Frank Peebles and Smokey Joe finished second and third to Kasson. Robert. Tiemann scored his second 125cc Novice victory in three days over close rival Shawn Clevenger, making it look easy on his way to solid firsts in each heal. Gary Grose made things interesting for Clevenger throughout the afternoon, pursuing him with dogged determination for the better part of the proceedings. Big Tex Yamaha of San Antonio's Jamie Blevins also jousted with Clevenger . in the early stages of moto two before falling back. When the party was over, Tiemann was the winner, with Clevenger second and Grose third. Weldon Hubbard surprised Everett Lee in the 250cc Beginner class, hauling in the first big trophy of his short career wi th a narrow win in the second heat, good enough to place him first overall for the day. Hubbard made the finish all the more dramatic by stalling his bike with half a lap to go as Lee closed. in. He re-kindled the flame with only feet to spare and hung on to pass the flag in front. Temple ace B. Keith bulls mustered a last-lap charge to·nip Gene Czimskey for third position. ly Results MINI MINI: 1. Mark Savoie (Kawl; 2. Scotty Weatherington (Yam); 3. Cody Atkins (Yam). Reynolds rules at Hidden Valley MX By Joe Milian SAN ANTONIO, TX, ocr. 23 In the early days of motocross racing in Texas, Rob Reynolds and his 400 CZ were mainstays in the Open Expert class, always up near the front when the three moto series were tallied. Reynolds has dropped down a notch in his latest return to competition, today at Hidden Valley, campaigning a Suzuki in the 250cc Intermediate division. He showed that very few of the skills that took him to the top as a Pro have worn off, registering a strong win over Donald Krock and Jeff Wilson. Reynolds had little trouble with the revamped Hidden Valley track, just south of San Antonio. The chal- . lenging layout was helped by the addition of 30 tons of sand and the heightening of two of the back-seCTion jumps. Even at a distance, Reynolds' lanky frame and stand-up style were unmistakeable and his position at the front of the Pilck brought back a lot of memories for those who were fortunate to be around during the "glory days" at Lockhart and Saye~s. Willy Kasson was but a babe In arms when father Bill was doing battle with Reynolds a decade ago, but he did some winning of his own today, taking a runaway victory in the Micro Mini class, earning the first of what will undoubtedly be a long line of hardware before he is done. The elder Kasson had his hands full in the Over 30 Expert clash, trading heat wins with Mike Farmer and finishing second overall. Joe Marcucci, in front of his hometown cheerleading section, won a tough two-moto confrontation with Charles McDonald and Jamie Bauman in some of the most closely contested action of the day. Gracious as ever, the thoroughly fatigued Marcucci made a special point of congratulating McDonald at the completion of their two-race set, demonstrating that sportsmanship. can be just as important as winning. The 250cc Novice class is always one of the toughest to win and Marcucci did it in style_ Expert ranks wer~ somewhat thinned today by the big NMA bash at Lake Whitney, but Kevin Horton's enthusiasm was not dimmed in the least. Horton proved that beside being a top-notch road racer and st!i~ium track designer, he can also do It In the dirt with the best of them. The San Antonio Suzuki pilot left Ronnie Prado with runner-up cash in both motos, flashing past the checkers by a comfortable margin in each appearance. Jeff Ellis, the pride of the Big Tex Yamaha, barely broke a sweat and made it look easy as he coasted into the third slot ahead of David Stutts. Results MICRO MINI: 1. Willy Kasson (Yam); 2. Hodes, Bruce top Austin night MX By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, ocr. 28 Hank Hodes turned back all comers in the 250cc Intermediate class tonight and Carter Bruce led the Open Intermediate field to glory in after-dark doings at Austin Moto Sport Park. Tinker Mayfield, journeying up to the Capitol City from his hom~ base in San Antonio, gave Hodes his suffest challenge, but Hodes' consistency won out in the end. The college student [rom Killeen has made remarkable progress since the start of the summer, moving from Beginner to Intermediate status in the span of only a few months. His KX250 has certainly seen better days, but Hodes has not been slowed by the lack of horsepower or ill handling. Plagued by poor starts in his early races, Hodes is consistently at the head of the pack through the first turn. This evening's performance ~as no exception as he took both moto WinS from start to finish. John Hendrix had something of a lackluster showing, placing third behind Mayfield. Robert Tiemann and Shawn Clevenger had their latest showdown in the I25cc Novice class, with Tiemann having a surprisingly easy time of it considering the faCT that Clevenger has been almost unbeatable in recent weeks. Clevenger's victory in moto two was not enough to offset his DNF in the initial round and Tiemann was satisfied to cruise in second place and capture the overall trophy. Mike Merlo did his usual competitive job and finished behind Tiemann when the scores were tabulated. Jason Walker, who many thought would play the role of spoiler in the TiemannClevenger dispute, was a last minute scratch with bike problems. Jack Beckman, ridinga'125 Cagiva for Arlett's Cycle Sales, put the Italian small-bore through its paces tonight to lead alll25cc Experts. Even though he is still in the process of adapting to his new mount, Beckham appeared comfortable in piloting the new machine to the checkers ahead of Bill Kelly and Rick Telander. Orr BOYD, TX, OCT. 22 Leah Richards rode her HondaTown automatic to her first win over the guys in the 50cc short track events at Mike Kidd's Hillside Raceway, leading in both the heat race and main event ahead of Jason Adcock and Joe Gilbert, Jr. Alan Powers put his Dot Powerssponsored Yamaha out front in the 250cc J uniar short track to lead the firsl heal race wire to wire ahead of Willie McCoy's Bates Cycles Honda and James McQuaid. The second heat saw Jack Yost put his Motorcycle Specialties Yamaha to the front, followed by Rocky Fivecoat, also on a Yamaha, and the Harley Sprint of David Best. In the main event Powers again LOok the lead ahead of McCoy, Yost and Fivecoat. On lap two Fivecoat slipped off the groove in the number one corner, while Best took over the fourth-place slot followed by McQuaid in fifth. Yost pushed inside McCoy on the number four corner in lap three to take over second place and chase Powers. On a last-lap, lastcorner try, Yost clipped Powers' rear wheel, bobbled and nearly got McCoy, but both riders saved itand Yost took second, with McCoy in third place while Powers held onto the win. The 250cc Junior TT race had a new winner also as Mike George hurried his Honda around the track to take the win. George won the heat race ahead of points leader Bobby Shaw on a Suzuki and Jack Surber's Yamaha. After falling in the heat race, Kevin Switzer got tbe early lead in the main.
