County Raceway near Palmdale. Riddled lVith upsets, the Professional compl;tition had everybody guessing from the start. In Top Fuel, a smoking gatejob by Gary Fernandes of Sacramento (number five qual), trailered number one qualifier Nigel Patrick of Huntington Beach, and number three qualifier (last event winner), Russ Glashan of Las Vegas Honda-Kawasaki, broke against the number seven qualified Harley of R. Mitchell- turning the entire' tone of the event. In other round-one Top Fuel action, the Suzuki nitroburner ridden by Ron Durham, of Durham-Wright Racing, stopped the Rawlings Motor Maniacs injected H-D with (:Iyde aboard 8.62 153.84 to 10.78-132. and Clark Sargis on the Rivera Engineering "The Shop" Kawasaki, outran the supercharged Rawlings Harley with Keith Ruxton up by an 8.53157.61 mph to 9.683-142.18 margin. In second round action, Durham made the best of the round with a win over Sargis 8.56-12.36 while Mitchell was defeated by Fernandes 9.14-14.08. On the final, Durham blazed to an 8.97 win as Fernandes shut off at midtrack. Taking nothing away from Durham's three-round TF victory" Fernandes effort was a credit to his new turbo-nitrous combination. Pro Stock, which is usually a week show in East Coast AMA dragbike racing, proved excellent at the Western Finals with seven entries. In round one, number four qualifier Marc McMahan advanced as Thomas Hadri Hardin broke, number three qualifier Anthony D. Anderson of Los Angeles advanced at the expenseof M. Eric Marsh's Suzuki from Los Altos (reigning Western Pro Stock Divisional Champion) as the Suzuki broke (Anderson ran 9.13-146.18). I!1 the third pairing, number two quahfier, Jeffrey Davis Kawasaki from Canoga Park, on the Hot Bike Magazine entry, stopped number five qualifier Lee Hayes after Hayes broke. Number one qualifier Rick Gero eased thru on the bye. In round two, Gero's Advanced Machine, Giordano's Bakery of Newark, New Jersey Suzuki, outran the Anthony Anderson Suzuki with a 9.05 to Anderson's 16.05, and Jeffrey Davis's JDS Enterprises, Arias, Performance Machine Kawasaki, made t!:le finals by defeating the Marc McMahan Z with a hairsbreadth margin 9.45-9.50. Results STREET KING TROPHIES SHOVELHEAD: Rick Cox, HD CROSS: Charly Fagan, SPORTSTER: Jim Keller, October was the month for the local nighttime tracks to end their 1983 season. Ascot had their final event on the 12th and just this week California Racing Club hosted the show. It was also one of two last chances to qualify for the San Diego Amateur Supercross. A four-man 250cc Pro class might be considered small yet a good battle developed. After taking a few hard knocks from the competition, O'Neal/International Yamaha rider Mark White emerged as the overall winner. Malcolm Smith/Allec Bros. Vince McMahon frequents OCIR and Corona but rarely does he race against the valley boys at the Dunes. McMahon was out to increase his CRC points and would like to walk off with the cash prize that is awarded to the three Pro class leaders. Taking the first moto lead was White who led Robert Laughlin, Jon
