tbern Nevada· Soutbern California·Arizona·Soutbern Nevada· Soutbern Cailfornia·Arizona·Soutbern Nevad.a·Soutbern Cali became the runner-up on the trophy list next to the winner Lance Johnson. Rosamond Suzuki-rider JeH SegaLe was the Leading man with the start of the first moto. Lou Ray Ent.-rider Mark Harwell was behind SegaLe in second. Johnson placed in third. Mike Hughes from Suzuki of Van Nuys was holding down fourth. Several of the hotshoes in the line-up failed to place well. Rich Truchinski on a Dick Aliens Honda had a sputtering engine. Later Truchinski bailed into a haybale. Mid-Cities Honda-ace Jon Barrick was 'back in the pack also. The lead positions started to alter. While hauling down the sandwash, Harwell flew past Segale to swipe the lead position away. Segale was in second place until Johnson slid past him on a bend by the start and Segale was demoted to third. Harwell had it made with the top spot until he hit some water and this made his Suzuki sputter and cut out. Within a lap, Harwell moved from first back to fourth place. Johnson took advantage of this and became the new leader over Segale, Hughes, Harwell and Toste. That first moto gave Segale, Harwell and Johnson a chance to taste the first-place position. In the final round the three riders had to settle for following the extremely fast pace set by Toste. Lap after lap Toste maintained the lead. Johnson came closest to Toste and was in second, butat the same time, he realized that he had the best chance at the overall win. Johnson got a good break with Harwell's Suzuki watering out in the first round but it was his hard riding thateamed him the first-place victory. The 1-2 tally belonging to Johnson easily topped that belonging to Toste and Segale who both had six points. Toste took second place over Segale as he had the finer second moto score. Segale landed third place over Harwell and Hughes. MaId, McMahon, Fernandez top Great Pumpkin G.P. By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, OCT. 30 As the sun broke through the morning fog Sunday, the Eighth Annual Great Pumpkin Grand Prix got under way at Corona Raceway. Greg Nash (Hon) led a thundering pack of 250cc Pros out of the first corne.r, trailed by Ken lahrt (Pacific Brass Foundry/Hon), Jon Friesen (Suzuki of Riverside), and Montclair Yamaha's Keith Williamson. About mid way through the first lap, Malcolm Smith Products' Vince McMahon (Yam) was on Nash's rear fender and passed him by doubling the water hold jumps. Sinisalo's Greg Zitterkopf (Hon) tucked in behind McMahon at the begiiming of the second lap, and the two seta blistering pace as they pulled away from Nash and the rest of the pack. McMahon couldn't put any distance 0!1 Zitterkopf as the two stayed within a few bikelengths throughout much of the race. McMahon's new Yamaha would give him some room down the straights, but Zitterkopf would be back on his rear fender in the turns. "He gained about five or six bikelengths on the straights," said Zitterkopf, "but I almost passed him every . time back lrtdfualSl1k>w1 &eattoh. ': II After half of the 45 minute moto was up, the two riders were still battling. Their fast pace had carried them past eventual Open Pro winner Dave Fernandez (Cycle Works/Suz) and it looked as though it would be a race right down to the wire. But on the sixth lap, Zitterkopf crashed out of contention, by the time he got going McMahon was long gone. Thrusting his fist in theair, McMahon knew he had the win in the bag and cruised to the finish all alone. Zitterkopf had enough distance to finish ahead of Nash. As McMahon and Zitterkopf ran away the 250's, Rick Maki (Answer Products/Suz) was busy doing the same with the I25cc Pros. Gary Denton (ST Racing/Suz) was the first rider to the first turn, but instead of turning went straight ahead for an extra 100 feet. "I was goin' so fast I just overshot the turn," he said. "I didn't realize it came up so quick'" Denton only made another lap before his engine seized. Maki found himself in last after falling in the first turn, but by the second Lap was in the lead for good. Sunwest Yamaha's Chris Lance held down second until he fell, allowing Randy Yetto (Barnes Yamaha of Barstow) to catch and pass him. Yetto pulled out enough distance to finish a comfortable second ahead of Paul Thede (Honda of PomonaiST Racing). Lance faded back to eighth at the finish. Vice puts on the squeeze at CoronaMX By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, OCT. 28 Town and Country Cycle's Charles Vice (Suz) put together two victories tonight at Corona Raceway to top the Mini Beginner - 12 years of age and under class. Vice grabbed the holeshot in the first moto, followed by Brian Sanchez (Yam), Fairway Yamaha's David Parker, and C&H Kawasaki's Jacob Swain. While Vance and Sanchez put some distance on the remainder of the pack, Swain displaced Parker to fourth and left him to contend with Jamie Morabito (Sunwest Yamaha). Up front, Sanchez was knocking at Vice's door, pulling alongside the Suzuki pilot but never quite finding the right line to get by. Vice didn't have to put up with it for long though. At the end of the second lap Sanchez went down, leaving Vice to cruise to the checkered flag. "I went into a dip and the bike just slid over," Sanchez later said. Sanchez remounted quickly enough to remain in second ahead of Swain. Meanwhile, Morabito nabbed the fading Parker for fourth and the top four were set. Kal Gard's Robert Naber (Kaw) closed in on Parker and, after some trouble, went by in the closing laps. Naber nabbed the holeshot in the second moto, with Vice, Morabito, and Swain in tow. His lead was shon lived as all three riders passed him quickly. By the second lap, Sanchez had recovered from a poor start and was challenging Morabito for second. The two riders diced for a couple of laps until Sanchez went down trying to get by. While this was going on, Vice had pulled out a comfortable lead over Morabito, who found himself all alone in second. Naber got . back on the gas and repassed Swain , for:th.i.rd by,the jIlloto'send. , .. I • ... 'Dangerous' Dana Wiggins styled to victory in the 1 O-years-of- age-and- up 60cc Pee Wee class at Corona nighttime motocross. With a pair of Smith goggles, complete with Roll-Offs, up for grabs to the winner of the first moto of the 250cc Novice class, competition was sure to be fierce. Jeff Stevens (Yam) led his class out of the first turn, followed by Bobbie Cornell (Hon) and Steve Scrape (Hon). Scrape wasted little time in moving to second and set his sights on Stevens. A few laps later Scrape inherited the lead for good when Stevens apparently tangled with another rider and went down, falling to fifth. Stevens picked himself up and started a mad charge to the front, but couldn't make up enough ground to Catch Cornell for second by the time the race ended. Cornell grabbed the holes hot of moto two, with Stevens and Scrape close behind. The three freight-trained it around the course for a couple of laps until Stevens got tired of second and moved into the lead. A lap later, Scrape dropped Cornell to thud and started moving in on the leader. Scrape got close on the final lap when Stevens ran into lapped traffic, but not close enough as the checkered flag flew for Stevens, just a bikelength ahead of Scrape. Results PEE WEE 9-UNDER: ,. Deluenne ADELANTO, CA, OCT. 23 It was a hot day at Sunrise Val- ley Cycle Park, but that didn't stop Bobby Moore as he went six-for-six in the 80cc Expert class. By the first 80cc Expert-Modified moLO, the track had become very rough. Out of the first turn, DG/ Yamaha-rider Mike Young had a slim lead over Kawasaki-mounted Bobby Moore, Robert Naughton and Cory Falter. On the first lap, Moore had worked his all-new Kawasaki 80 into the lead. By the third lap, Moore had a comfortable lead over Naughton, Young, and, Barona Oaks local, Cory Falter. On the fifth lap, aughton's Kawasaki came to a halt just after the finish line corner, as he experienced an engine seizure. Young, then, moved imo second and Falter into third. The moLO finished in that order, with Moore taking the win. Moore pulled the second-moto holeshot and was never headed. Sini.salo rider Robert Naughton followed in second with Young and Falter close behind. Moore seemed to have no problems as he cruised to an overall win with Naughton a distant second. Young had gone down in the back section giving Falter third in that moto. Falter ended up finishing second overall, followed in third by Nicky Pounds. The first 80cc Stock Expert moto saw Bobby Moore pull the holes hot and then leave the pack behind. Moore was followed by Robert Naughton, Mike Young and 'Cory Falter. Their positions never changed as Moore took the win, followed by Naughton, Young, and F.alter. _ <. JT/Kawasaki-mQlItI(eljtdQQ~:<*l9t" • • ,,2&: ,
