The Yamaha pilot finished second with a 1-2 tally. (Top) Warren Reid (69) and Rick Johnson (16) spent most of the first mota this close. Johnson went on and took the win in both motos in the 2601. Jeff Hicks rode consistent for second overall in the 250cc class. However. • it was all he needed to capture the series win. (Above left) Brian Myerscough (45) finished third in the first mota and fell in the second. (Right) George Holland won both motos and the 125 title. start), Bowman and Brooks. Second overall went to Henricksen with ¥,anley third. /"!! "I didn't really feel very good out tnere today," commented Holland after his victory. "In the first moto, I 'fi)st my goggles and I got dirt in my ~es. Overall, I felt real stiff. During 'the week, out practicing, I fell and fiurt my back, so I didn't get much P. acuce. .... '"\ • II 250 Pro of} If there was a series holeshot award, it would definitely have to go to ;ream Tamm's Jeff Hicks. Throughout the series Hicks has holeshot all ~ut one race in the 250cc class and l,Qday was no exception. At the start of the first 250cc moto, it was no other dian "J.D." Hicks leading the pack. In second and third were Richard Sands and Warren Reid, on a 1984 YZ250. Local favorite Jim Tarantino was in rourth followed by Yamaha's Rick ]6hnson, Team Tamm's Mike Shoer:naker and Brian Myerscough, who was the only rider who had a chance ar the overall against Hicks. On the second lap, Reid slipped by Sands and set after Hicks. Reid, who is very familiar with Saddleback, reeled in Hicks and the two dueled for the lead. Through a shon straight, Reid managed to find a way around Hicks for the lead. At the same time, Johnson was on the warpath and had advanced himself 10 third right behind Hicks. It didn't take Johnson too long to get around the Honda pilot, Hicks, and the two Yamaha pilots began a dogfight which lasted for the next four laps. Finally Johnson shot down his teammate and took control. Myerscough worked his way up and snuck by Hicks by the midway point. From this point on, positions remained the same. Johnson took the win ahead of Reid, Myerscough, Hicks and Tarantino. Hicks lived up to his reputation and stole the second-molO holeshot ahead of Tarantino, A.J. Whiting, Johnson and Myerscough. By the end of the first lap, Johnson had made his way by Whiting and set out after Hicks. During lap two, Hicks fell prey to Johnson's fast pace and dropped to second. Myerscough slipped by Tarantino a few laps later, but shortly after, Myerscough went down in a turn and dropped back to seventh. Reid started 10 work his way up through the field after an early crash, passing Myerscough and a few others until he was in fourth. Johnson was easily pulling away from the pack while Hicks hung in there in second. In third rode a very fast Whiting in his last ride on his Yamaha. Whiting will ride a Honda for Team Tamm in the future. Johnson went on to take the win ahead of Hicks, Whiting, Reid and Tarantino. However, the day belonged to Hicks. After the moto, Hicks was greeted by an ecstatic Team Tamm crew with hugs and champagne - their first major series win. "I was kind of dis· appointed with the track." said a somewhat calm Hicks. "It wasn't hard enough. It was too easy, even though the first motoI ran out of energy. The second moto, I don't think Reid got such a good start and when Myerscough went down it wasn't 100 bad." 500 Pro In the Open class, the leader was another new Team Tamm member, John Whelchel, in one of his lastTide on his Yamaha. Whelchel has been riding very fast, smoothl y and consistenty throughout the series, which gave him a 20-point cushion over KTM's John Finkeldey. Finkeldey had a rough morning before practice when his mount SlaTted to experience transmission probJems. This gave Finkeldey only one lap of practice on a track he is unfamiliar with. Yamaha-mounted Scott Johnson jammed into the lead at the start of the first moto while Scott Manning, Pete Snorteland, Jerome Heiberger, Larry Wosick and Steve Rhyan pursued. Whelchel was found in eighth. But he didn't stay there for very long. During the first lap, Manning slipped by Johnson and took over the lOp spot. Soon after, Snorteland wedged by Johnson and then Manning. Finkeldey was running about 12th after two laps. All eyes were peeled on Whelchel as he picked off riders one by one. Team Tamm's Dan Conway was also on the gas after a poor start and was following in Whelchel's knobby prints. Whelchel was unstoppable and lOok the lead a few laps from the end. Conway also worked his way into second at the same time, but Whelchel was breathing easier with a somewhat comfortable advantage. Whelchel went on 10 take the win ahead of Conway, Snorteland, Heiberger and Manning. The second moto was all Whelchel's. He slOle the holeshot and that was all he needed 10 take the win at the 500cc series overall. Again, Conway finished second in the moto while Snorteland, Manning and Heiberger rounded out the top five. • Results 125 PRO: ,. George Holland (Suz). 2-1; 2. Kun Henricksen (Yam). 1-2; 3.
