Pickett powers to Bagdad 100 win By Steve Hammer MURPHY, 10, OCT. 9 Dillon Cycle-sponsored Howard Pickett powered his Yamaha YZ250K to a convincing win in the annual Bagdad 100 desert race. Another Dillon's rider, Ron Dillon, rode his YZ490K to second overall and the Open class win. One hundred twenty-five riders showed up for the event, sponsored by the Desert Raiders Motorcycle Club. With only one more SIDRA points event left for the year, riders were going for all the points they could get. At II a.m., with everyone staged, the bikes went quiet and the starting banner was raised. The tight, rocky, and gnarly start section seemed to allow a fair start for everyone regardless of displacement, and Bob Nancolas (250 Hon), flew over the smokebomb hill with the lead. Right behi nd was Dillon, who is finall y recovered from h is broken foot suHered in May. Pickett was moving up rapidly, recovering from a truly wretched start, and was horrifying other riders as he passed a dozen at a time. About five miles out, Nancolas blew a turn and Dillon slipped by and into the lead. The order into the first check was; Dillon, Nancolas, Dan Lees (500 Hus), Curt Harpham (490 Mai) and Bill Dowers (500 Hus). The screaming 125s of Jerr Miller (Cag), and Steve Henry (KTM), were also running very high at this' point. The Raiders have always put on rough races, and this one was no exception; the first 27-mile loop took Dillon 58 minutes LO comp~ete. The loop was full of rocks and tight gullies, and many riders came if] with flats after one lap. Dowe.rs parked for the Experience the Finest In day, and Nancolas lost 20 minutes in the pits changing a flat. As the second lap unfolded, Dillon still led, but Pickett continued his charge and had moved up to a close second. Harpham held third, and the 125cc duo of Miller and Henry occupied fourth and fifth. Anotber I 25cc rider, Daniel Huskey, was turning heads as he pushed his Suzuki into the LOp 10 and took over the top Novice spot. About halfway through the lap, Dillon landed on a big rock orr a jump and went over the bar. Pickett SLOpped and orrered assistance, but Dillon was OK and encouraged his teammate to continue. Pickett took orr and held the LOp spot to the end. Dillon, slightly bruised, held his second and Harpham wound up third. Miller's Cagiva threw a chain and he DNf, sooiling- a fantastic ride and insurin'g the-125cc win LO Steve Henry's KTM. The rough terrain definitely took a toll, as only 69 riders finished and the Desert Raiders once again earned their reputation as a club with tough events. Other super performances were turned in byTyler Eckard (490 Yam), Rick Stoolman (250 Yam) and Rick McUne(5OOHus), who won the Open Novice, 250cc Novice and Senior classes, respeaively. ltaian Craftsmanship and Engineering from ~ @§;1@3[J\J!l;. .. , -' () o a Results OVERALL: 1.
