Two for Toland at at AFM Willow Springs By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, OCT. 16 Doug Toland put in a good showing in his first big-bore outing as he piloted a Shelby Thompson-tuned GPz 1100 to two wins at the American Federation of Motorcyclists' double-points meet at Willow Springs. In the Open Stock Production, Toland fought Kevin Dolan tooth and nail for the trophy, with 750cc class Earl Roloff also getting in on the action. But, when Roloff real ized went on to take the troph y. jim Poet and Todd Brubaker gOI into it in the 600cc Modified Production with a tough battle for the win and the extra points. Earl Roloff was an early casually of that race as he lost the front end in the turn-two sweeper as he tried topassjim Vreekeand went down, uninjured. Poet was the even, tual winner. After being plagued all day by a phantom oil leak, Dave Emde rode the Kosman Superbike to the Formula one victory. But, since Emde is not in the points race and in true gentleman form, he gave the official win and points to second-place Denny Doherty. Behind them was a battle of the brands as Honda-mounted Mike .. f Wl1bams ought Kawasaki-pilot Mark Thomas and Suzuki-rider Kerry Bryant. And in the end, the Williams Racing Interceptor came out ahead. he would still get the 750cc win, he backed off a bit and let the other two have at it. Conney cruises to Saddlebacf( win By Ken Stein SADDLEBACK, CA, OCT. 16 Riding tmder the assumed name of "Bob Bitchen," John Conney raced two Intermediate classes today at Sadd1eback, and led three of the four moLOS flag to flag. When Mike Dodge injured his knee, Conney borrowed his YZ250. In his first 250cc Imermediate start ever, Conney grabbed both holeshots and ran off with the lead ahead of the Hondas of Tom Brown and Ken Erb. Conney smoked 'em again in the second moLO, finishing far ahead of Husky's Alan Olsen, and Brown. Back on his own Kawasaki for the 125cc class, Conney again holeshot the first moLO, and won it pulling away (rom Trey McFarland's Yamaha and Mike Amcliffe's Kawasaki. Moto two began the same way, with a "Bitchen" holeshoI. Halfway through the (irstlap, Conney's engine began breaking up, and Yamaha pilot Dan Hovis slipped by. Two turns later, while lrying for are-pass, Conney touched wheels with Hovis and went down. In the last corner of the first lap, the KZ seized for good, ending Conney's e[(orts (or the day. Kawasaki shoe jimmy Palmer caught Hovis for the lead in the first lap, but Hovis took over again at the halfway point, and led the rest of the race. Mike Amcliffe caught john Davis for third on the sixth lap, (or a Kawasaki 1,3, and 4 finish. After talking LO numerous potential rides for '84, all o( whom urged him to remain Intermediate, Conney has some very bad news for the other Intermediates. Conney will be around all next year, unless someone o[[ers him a Pro sponsorship. Yamaha rider Andy Guth spent most of the first 250cc Pro moto chasing down Bob Trone's Honda. He caught Trone with onJy three laps lefl. Craig Cable's Honda caught Trone on the following orbit, but couldn't gain on Guth. Trone holeshot the second moto, but on Iy lasted three laps. Cable inherited the lead with Guth right behind and closing. Guth took the lead on the seventh lap and pulled away. jerry Black, on a KTM, moved up from nearly last to finish third. junior 125 rider Dean Kuhn followed David Graff around throughout the entire first moto, but couldn't get by for a 1-2 Suzuki finish. McMahon top Pros (again) at Corona. nighttime Motocross By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, OCT. 14 Vince McMahon went home the winner of the 250cc Pros at Corona Raceway tonight after two tough battles against rival Pat Weber. Weber, sponsored by Pomona Valley Kawasaki, grabbed the holeshot in the first moto, with Honda of Canada's Darren Sarusa and Montclair Yamaha's Keith Williamson hot on his heels. McMahon, riding for Malcolm Smith Products on a Yamaha, started poorly and was near the back of the pack. As Weber pulled away, McMahon began his fight to the fronl. jerry Black (KTM) was an unfortunate victim to McMahon's charge }Vhen the two banged bars through the whoops, sending Black off the course. By the third lap, McMahon had Weber within striking distance but a slight mistake in the stadium whoops gave Weber a little more room. The cushion didn't last, though. McMahon was back on his rear fender within a half a lap and seemed determined to pass. He made .his move coming out of the first turn by going to the inside of a lapped rider while Weber took the outer line. The lapper moved to the outside to make way for McMahon, drifting into Weber's line. Weber made a despeorate artempt·(E)-get-by. but ran out-··
