Sampson finally wins CRC enduro By Mike Klinger RANDSBURG, CA, OCT. 9 KTM·mounted Scott Sampson finally picked up an overall win, taking California Racing Club's Roadrunner Enduro. rain. The 35-mile loop was very challenging for most of the riders, incl uding the 30 mph special test. The 3.5 mile test was a real hustle to zero,. even for some B riders, but a reset following tile section really helped o~. A long and smooth road led the.riders right through the pits to the final checkpoint of loop one. Riding on minute 18, Hopkins turned in a super score of .30, a full minute over her nearest competitor. Last montb's winner, Billy Huston, put his Yamaha YZ80 into second overall just one seco!ld ahead of Darin Trippensee (Yam), who tied. with Scott Bristol . (Suz) for third. The beginning of loop two was a real treat for the spectators, along with the riders. The start was just out of camp and the onlookers could see a tricky hillclimb section and then some high-speed ridge runnin~. Off the ridge riders dropped straIght down into a long canyon at 24 mph. The riders headed south over some real rolJer-coaster·type terrain and the first few checkpoints were easy to zero. Not so on the special test; 36 mph for quite a distance over the most demanding course CRC has provided in a long time. Because ofthe special test, none of the riders zeroed the course. Sampson's 1.56 score was one of eight scores in the one's. Three seconds off Sampson was Palenske (1.59) with Kurt Butler (1.67) third. Robb Mese· cher, a 250cc AA rider had the fourth Sampson.. who finishes among the leaders everytime he participates, took the win from Maico-mounted Gram Palenske by only three seconds. Kurt Butler (Yam), who just came off the District 37 win the week before, was third overall, just II secondsoffSampson's time. Shauna Hopkins (Hon) turned the' beSt score over more than 60 riders to to.p the one-loop contestants. Riding In the 200 A-Woman's division,.Hopkins was the only rider to zero the course, losing 30 seconds. Over 500 riders tackled the Roadrunnei enduro, with the pits just outside the township of Randsburg. With Randsburg beingan old mining town, the back country enabled the course to wind down many old mining roads and of course, Government Peak. The first riders left at 8 a.m. for a pretty aggressive first loop. As the day progressed, even getting to the three-mile marker was a chore. Thonon had a smooth ride, finish· ing ahead of Gordo Parham. First Senior Novice was Chuck Nelson (25Occ Amateur) got his class win with a healthy lead, finishing fifth overall with his class competition no where in sight.
