Roloff finished in second. the San Diego Amateur Supercross race in November. . The Minis fired up a crop of 80cc modified machines. Novice Don Burke and Steve Wamboldt, turned their Kawasakis loose and dueled tight down to the wire. Burke emerged the leader in both motos. Wamboldt cinched the runner up slot and Kawasaki Central entry Alvin Matthews rounded out the top three. A mixed bag of Intermediates hit the track and stormed their way through both motos. Throughout the day, 250cc racers. Gien WeJls and Bill Scott, feuded from one end of the track to the other. In their first round. they drag raced off the line. Scott edged his way past Wells and by the half-way mark had established a comfortable lead and appeared to be a shoein until a get off. Wells led across the line holding Scott to second and Tom Brown. The top three were all Honda mounted. Second-moto action found the "dastardly duo" of Wells and Scott fighting each other for the win. well into the seventh lap. Heading into a tum, one went to the inside and the other to the outside, only to mix it up through the turn with Scott bailing into the tires. Brown took over second with Larry Dimmitt clinching third for the moto. Wells emerged with a ride in San Diego under his belt and top honors for_tl:!e day. Brown gathered second-place gold and Dimmitt took home third overall honors with a slick 4-3 ride for the day. Results 22 80 NOV: 1. David Ochoe lKaw). 60 INT: 1. Joel Tolcarlllty (Kaw): 2. SEPT. 24 Suzuki pilot Tony Gomez powered to the 250cc Pro overall victory at this weeks Saddleback Motocross event. Gomez used two runner-up finishes to outpoint his competition in the race. Vince McMahon wicked his Yamaha into the first moto lead and opened a safe lead at the midway point only to have chain problems send him to the pits. McMahon re-entered the race a couple laps down but rode hard to :work back up to sixth at the finish, as Yamaha rider Danny Bartholomew led Gomez to the checkers ahead of Maico-mounted Val Tamietti. McMahon avenged his first moto problems by running away :with the second round. Gomez pushed hard to stay in second knowing the overall win was at stake as Tamieui kept the pressure on from third. Tamietti claimed the number two share of the cash with Batholomew placing third overall and McMahon taking fourth with a 6-1 score. BTSlWheelsmithiHonda rider Bill Keefe claimed the first Open Pro moto win but DNF the second leaving the overall door open for first round runner-up Mark Adamson to move his Suzuki into the top slot. Honda rider Bob Rutte thumped his way to second. Michael Preston piloted his Kawasaki to the 125cc Pro class victory despite tough competition from Suzuki riders Mike Kell and Tim Foster. Kell picked up the second-place honors in each moto with Foster taking a credible third. day evening. Unfortunately it got away from more than a couple of them and the am bu lance had to move and transport. The program was shortened to two races per class instead of the usual three; time to run off the program being the factor. In the 250cc Novice class, Archie Perez led the first race all the way to the finish but had troubles in the secona. Al Maglietto won it followed by Steve Dyer and R.M. Stoutenburg. Curtis Cannon rather devastated the 250cc Expert class, with the rest of the riders straggling out around the circuit. At one point, Bruce Nordstrom and Bryan McDowell did make a race out of it and Ted Taylor was well placed in second, until he was forced out of it. Dana Dumont, Ed Ho and Tim McEntee had a good one going first race of the 500cc Novice until McEntee was forced out with a broken oil line dumping all over his pipe creating lots of smoke. Ed Ho went home the winner. Mike Boyle, one of the original Griptsters M.e. members who was responsible for those terrific Elsinore Grand Prixs. almost did himself in in the 500cc Expert class. He came over the jump, got out of shape and crashed. He is currently spending some time in Harbor General getting some foot bones put back into their proper placement and nursing assorted bruises. Chris Carr won the class with a commanding lead both times out. but. the second race it was Curtis "Cannonball" Cannon who unloaded. His mount shook its head violently after a landing over the jump and slung Curtis off. The hard ground rang his chimes and he got a ride to the hospital with a broken arm. CA, SEPT. 21 The last Wednesday nile of the season saw a very good turnou~ of sportsmen and some fine racing on the Corona ovals. The Pros that did show up got an excellent track to get a final tuneup for Ascot. The Open Money Short Track wa a match race between Roger Thompson and Eddie San Roman, and with I San Roman minus his Wood RotaX, it wasa wire-to-wire romp for Thompson. Things started out differently in the Open Money Half Mile with San Roman out in front by thedropofthe flag, John Barricklow second and Thompson third. Thompson got by • Barricklow on the second lap, and one lap later, found the chink in San Roman's armor to take over the lead. From thereon out, it was clear sailing for the youngster from Norco, as he chalked up his second money win of the nite. San Ramon held off Barricklow for the second. Barricklow did not go home empty handed, but in the Open Am/Expert Half Mile, he had to work for the win. Off the line, it was Bob Graves with Keith Peel in second and Dan Kane third. At the start, Barricklow was off fifth, but by the second laR had moved to fourth. and by tile! fourth lap he was running third. If took him until the seventh lap to move into second and with the whit [Jag out he went for it and nipped Graves at the finish line for the win. Dan Kane rounded out the field with third. The Short Track was mucfr easier for Barricklow as he got by~ Graves on the second lap and had ~t made. Keith Peel followed Graves home for the third. Results SHORTTRK PEE WEE: 1.
