AGO '" 0') r.he last AMA National of the year, the Ascot Half Mile, saw Yamaha's Kenny Roberts cap his champion· ship season by winning the 20-lap feature. After early leader David Aldana crashed his Norton, Roberts ran out in front all the way to break the track record by seven seconds. Ron Moore finished second on a Triumph and Randy Scott was third on a ¥amaha. The Trans-AMA series moved to Lexington, Ohio, and 500cc World Motocross Champion Roger DeCoster moved out front, taking the 500cc International class on his works Suzuki. Maico's Willi Bauer finished the day second over Piern Karsmakers and Hakan Anderson, both on Yamahas. First American, at sixth overall, was Bultaco's Jim Pomeroy. The 250cc Support win went to Honda's Rich Eierstedt. There was controversy and confusion aplenty in the big off-road race promoted by Mickey Thompson at Riverside International Raceway. The confusion came from all angles, but the controversy centered around Al ' Baker's pass of up-to-that-time Pro class leader Bill Silverthorn on lap 10 of the scheduled eight-lap race. Wayne Rainey utilized a Suzuki to win the I OOcc Amateur class of a Corona Raceway TT scrambles. In other action from that race, Rex Hailey won both the Open and the Special Amateur/Expert races. n the 250cc Junior GP class of an J\CA road race at Carlsbad Raceway, the finishing order read Wally Karp~nec (Yam), Ray Tophan (Kaw) and Harry Klinzmann (Yam). KarR,ynec also won the 350cc Junior GP class. One hundred and twenty-five riders started the Black Coal National Enduro. When it was over there were ooly two finishers, Penton rider Jack Penton and Husky pilot Bill Kain. As faf as the scoring for the win was concerned, Penton beat Kain by one point for the overall. The rest of the scoring was done by individual check· ~·nts. AJcot Park held a TT the night lk(ore the National haH mile, and John Hateley and his Triumph proved to be the ones to .beat i~ th.e Expert main. In the Jumor mam It was another Triumph rider, John Gennai, taking the win, and in the Novice race the victory belonged to Kawasaki rider Dennis Briggs. Mike Bast topped defending National Speedway Champ Rick Woods in the Scratch main at Costa Mesa's weekly speedway.fest.
