Racers l6exposedl6 at Ross Downs u o By Bob Bagwell Aaron Turreer displays winning form at the last Mountain Roadracing Association event of the season as he guides his G Pz550 through a corner. Walker clips Turner at Denver RR By Joe Day DENVER, CO. OCT. 2 The Mo~ntain Roadracing Associalion produced ils' lasl race of lhe 1983 season al Denver's brand-new Second Creek Raceway. This new Lrack, 1.7 miles of fresh, twisty blacktop, brightens the 'future of roadracing for the Rocky Mountain region's racers. The track's 13 turns demanded much in rider ability, "and by the mid-point of the program the racers had finally figured out where the horsepower could be turned on fully. Mike Pettiford turned on the horsepower in Open Production. From the grid of 42 bikes Pettiford led into turn one, showing Aaron Turner the fast lines. Pettiford led for two laps butloSI it in the very tight right-hand hairpin. Turner zoomed b¥. trailing Danny Walker and Mike Mangham. Scott Erickson and Steve Garnier dueled for third and fourth, Erickson leading Garnier and Mangham briefly. Turner kept Walker at bay, but Wal ker put the pegs to the asphalt on the last turn before the final straight, and took the checkered flag. Turner took second, Garnier third, and Erickson's last-turn crash gave Mangham founh. , Formula Olle was full of surprises. Kim Poner' holeshot on a Suzuki 1000 was enough to lead into the first turn, but bv turn three Kawasakimounted Du"ane Akiyama, Arlo Englund on a YZ490, and Bruce Sass on another YamaJ:1a motocrosser paraded around Porter. First Englund, then a s, passed Akiyama, putting the Yamaha motocrossers in a very fast seesaw battle for first. Sass and Englund exchanged the lead five times, with Sass seeming to toy with Englund. Englund, however, stayed on the pipe and did not allow Sass's lastturn pa s an'C! took the checkered flag by a wheel. Akiyama beat Dave Kieffer for third. Results 26 BEG: 1. Schmidt (Kaw); 2. Binkley blazes trail for Colorado Minis By Ernie Ferguson PUEBLO, CO, OCT. 2 There was a super turnoul in Pueblo Sunday as the best Mini riders in lhe stale challenged lhe tough track lhal Pueblo Motorspons had prepared for the occasion. The weather was comfortable for most of the day until late afternoon when the wind came up and the dust began to fly. ""Blazin' Brian" Binkley blew away all the competilioJ1 on his green machine sponsored by Kawasaki Denver. Binkley took all three motos in the championship event by large margins and no one really ever challenged all day long. with his style and talent it will be interesting to see what this 16-year-old will do next year when he graduates to the 125cc class. Behind Binkley, Jay Martin had a good day with two seconds and a seventh for the second overall. Jay Martin outbattled Darren DeLoach for the second spot, leaving third for DeLoach, who also rides out of Kawasaki Denver. Binkley also won the "Race of Champions" which pitted the best avice, Amateur and Expert riders in a staggered stan. In the Mini B competition, little Andy Atkins was successful in sweeping all three motos he was involved in. The "Bandit," as he is called, took no prisioners in his effon to make off with the largest trophy. Gary Losey finished second behind Atkins and in front of Derek Mize, who came back in the second and third motos after finishing II Lh in the first race. Atkins was a double winner on Lhe day as he also took all honors in the Pee Wee B class wilh strong races. There were so many Mini Novices present that they had to be divided in.to two classes. In the first class, Scott Fulcher took it away from the pack by sweeping both motos in front of Sam Weber and Chad Wallaston. In the second class, Jason Clark had a 1-2 morning, with Rusty Copper and Doug Frank rounding out the fi rst three. Results MINI A: 1. Brian Binkley; 2. Jay Manin; 3. Darren Deloach. 125 NOV: 1. Well lhe riders and the fans at the every-Saturday-nigh t mOlocross races al Ross Downs know it now. It seems as one of the 50cc rider's dad had a birthday and his wife and others hired a SLrip-OGram to come and surprise him. David Clements, falher'of the hardriding Tim Clements was called to the starting line during intermission and out of the crowd came a lovely lady dressed in a suit to wish him a happy birthday. Then suddenly music started playing and the lady started dancing and undressing. After a lot of dancing, undressing, and looking, things got back underway for the evening's racing. The50ccevents were, as usual, very crowded. The fans love to watch these "heavy weights" race. Arron Davis got lhings going his way and won, with Tim Clements second and Hugh Simpson third. Casey Pinkston and Jeb Stuart dueled in the 60cc class with Casey posting the win. Je[f Smith won the 80cc with Dave Stephens after him. The 125cc events were divided into two d.ivisions because of a large rider turnout. The two winners were Ronnie Camp and Bill Hazen. Scott Hachfield, Steve Hardin wen: second and George Gaal and Greg Taylor were third. Lots of hard racing in these two events. The 200cc class was won by Stuart Hamer with Steve Maiden hot on his heels. Charlie Gal benski, "The Gainesville Flash," won the 25Occevent, wilh Tony Mullinax and Randy Ross finishing in lhat order. Dan Puyear ran away with the open class, followed by Mark Smith and Brad Yackley. Herndon hogs Hillside ST By M.
