Smith's good luck holds at Shamrocks H&H By Shirley Upp RED MOUNTAIN, CA, SEPT. 25 Once again, Husqvarna rider Dan Smith turned his big 500XC loose and after approximately 73 miles of beautiful riding pulled in for another overall win at the Shamrocks Hare and Hound. It was obvious that the Shamrocks had put a lot of work into laying out the course from all of the 20 positive remarks from the riders al lhe finish. A really "fun course" and perfecl racing wealher was lhe order of the day. OUl pasl lhe bomb, il was Smilh leading wilh Chris Crandall (Hon) coming by at second. Dan AshcrafL (Hus), after a lhree-kick start, was closing in on Crandall as he came by al third. Gary Charters (Suz), riding in the 250cc Vet class loday, was one of lhe leaders as he came by in fourth. Having a spectacular ride was Derrick Paiement (Hon) as he came by in fifth overall and leading lhe 250cc class. Oren Beck II had th~ lead in lhe fie" class. After lhe firsl loop, Smith had a nice lead as he came in for gas. Rid- ing his new stock 1984 500XC Husky, it was obvious he was having no problems and was enjoying his lrouble-free ride. AshcrafL. also aboard a new Husky, came in running second, bUl he was having brake problems. Firsl 250cc Amaleur Paiement had moved up to overtake Charters and Crandall and was holding down third. Overall Crandall was running fourth, wilh Cory Timms having moved up to fifLh. Charters came in al sixth. Chuck Slearns (Yam) had moved into seventh, bUl was slarting lO gellired. He had been sick and lhe lasl part of lhe race would really sap whal slrenglh he had lefl. Nexl in lO refuel was hard-riding Eddie Augie running second 250cc Amaleur al eighlh. Beck was slill holding his own wilh the big bikes as he came by in ninth. Lee ScheHers, afler a lerrible slart, had done some great riding and moved up lO 10th. In the "C" Amateur class, Bob Wells had a nice lead. Steve Thompson was having a super rid~ and was running second overall Vet and first Open Amaleur. In lhe Open Amateur class, it was Brian Harris leading. with Hondamounted Todd Holu breathing down his neck. Hollz was gelling ready to take command of this class. In the Open Senior class il was Ron Surber taking charge. In the 250cc Senior class, it was Ron Hall OUl in fronl. Curt Horsl was winging his way to victory in lhe Senior Open Amateur class. In lhe Novice race, Open rider Mark Wiechmann had his 490 Yamaha on the move and was setting a fast pace for this group of hard cqargers. Running second overall was Vel Open Novice Mark Romp. Finishing up what he started, it was Smith pulling in for the viclory. Smith said he really liked lhe course; il had a liule of everylhing. bUl was tight and challenging. He said he only got into sixth gear a couple of times. Ashcrafl, pulling in for st;l:ond, was also impressed wilh his Husky. Third was Crandall who had overtaken Timms. Fourth was Timms who was glad to be "back at il" afler a three-month lay-off. Sche[fers had a good ride working his way up to fifth overall. !L's alway good to see Mike Sixbery racing and especially back in the desert. He had a fine ride today, finishing in sixth after getting by Mike Alexander aboul five miles OUl from the finish. After being back in aboul 25lh on lhe start, Alexander had a super ride, finishing eventh and first 250. Eighth was Vet Gary Charters taking a first in lhe 250cc Vet class. Tenth overall Tom Elias took a firsl in lhe "C" class. Firsl 250cc Amateur was Augie wilh a greal ride. The faslesl "C" bike Amateur was Bob Wells. Steve Thompson could not be beaten today as he took a wellearned first in the Open Vet class. In the Open Amateur class, Todd HolLz held off Brian Harris for the win in lhis competitive division. Mark Force was the first Open Vet Expert to cross the finish. In lhe Novice race, il was Mark Wiechmann taking the overall victory. Mark said the hardest part of the race was trying to pass riders, noting, "These guys don't like to be passed I" Second ovice was hard-riding John Reed. Taking third was Chris Han. One of the happiest racers today was "Tweet" Byrd, who took his first win in the Novice Senior Open class. In lhe Women's race, it was Denise Engstrom with a whopping lead. However. she was caught napping by Lori Vincent, with Lori Vincent taking the win and Engstrom second. In the American Womens race, il was Victoria Scott taking the win over Deanna Jenkins. Once again, Lori Anderson gave it her all and took the Novice win after a super ride. In lhe Beginner race, Gabe McNeese was the fastest, taking his 495 KTM lO the overall win. Taking second overall and firsl250 was Barry Parson on a Honda. First Senior Beginners was John Reees who had a great ride. I I Ed and Jeff Foland (Cagiva North America) notched the overall win in Fudpucker Racing Team otorious Dawg three-hour team race. East of the Borrego badlands lay the 15-mile course, where Jeff Bennett (Yam) jumped to the early lead followed by Foland (Ca~), Todd Kennedy (Yam) Jamie Tucker (Hon) and Brell Cushing(Hus). Bennett ledthe firsllap by a shon minute. Darryl Richardson took over for Bennett while Foland gave it to his brother: Jeff. They were side by side into home check. Richardson look another lap while Ed took over for Jeff. Richardson had some problems in the sand wash five miles into the third lap. Richardson layed it over in the sand and Ed blew by the downed rider. Folands held the position to the finish. "It was hOl," quipped Ed. "But it was a great course." Bennett/ Richardson held in a solid second while Jamie Tucker/Mike Hardaway battled with Gorden ClarkITodd Kennedy. 125cc Amateurs Roy Basin! Scott Reams took their class win over the Bird brothers.
