SEPT. 17-18 The friendly folks of Jeeps Cycle Club in Wichita hosted the second round of the Coors Midwest Motocross Series today. Riders from seven stales participaled in, ll}is event, lhe largest and most luqalive mOlocross series of the year in mis area. .~ eyes in the grandstands were rimled on me first tum as the 125cc Elf~rls opened the day's racing on S'mPay. Robby Peters led a crowded fi«;14; lhrough the opening series of corners, wilh Steve Pate immedileJy bettind him. As the tighlly grouped p~t;1l; began to lhin out down the higl}-speed back straight, Clay Hoens~1I and joe Burke began their move 10 the front which put them first and second respectively by !he second lap. Bl)'an Abernathy got boxed around illj the initial going. finding himself in 14th place at the completion o( the firs~ lap. Abernalhy men began a consistenl and calculated elimination of those competitors blocking his access to [.,s~ place that was quire remarkable in ~l~ execution. Abernalhy laler explained. The feal made all lhe more amazing by lhe qualilY o[ his compelition. lhe young Yamaha pilol once again erased all Opposilion in his bid for me lead posilion. Track announcer Gary Hersh berger had lhe large crowd slanding on lheir feel with hjs account of lhe slruggle, as Abernalhy moved by Dennis DaEl and sel oul a£ler Hoenshell wilh less lhan two minules remaining. Stone, Bauser win at Austin MX Park By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, SEPT. 16 Austin's Joey Stone upset highly favored Cedar Park Kawasaki rider Mike Merlo in Minibike Senior action tonight at Auslin Moto Spon Park. Allhough lhe two competilors lied on poinls afler their two· mota con[rontalion was compleled. SlOne lOok lhe overall win by vinue o[ his vic· tory in the second heal. Merlo ap· peared lo be headed [or another in a long SIring o[ lriumphs allhis course as he mOlored by all opposition in winning lhe opening molO with IiItle diHicullY. SlOne slayed close enough to lake advantage of any mis· takes, bUl never really made a serious lhreal to displace Merlo. Mark Koempel [ollowed SlOne al a distance to place lhird. The second molO witnessed SlOne jumping into a big lead on lhe firsl lap and lhen riding consislently 10 lhe che<;kered £lag lo record his firsl place finish. Merlo appeared 10 have lrouble establishing any kind o[ rhythm and rode a much di[[erent race than he did in lhe inilial round. Slone was especially e[[eclive al ne· gOlialing lhe troublesome leEl-hander allhe end of lhe [ront straightaway, using his quick line lhrough this area to keep his lead secure. Merlo held on lo lhe runner· up SpOl the entire heat lo finish second overall, Wilh KoempeJ third [or the evening. A determined e[[on by David "The Bruiser" Bauser helped him overcome some sliH compelition [rom (iva Is jon B. Ross and Evereu "Emerson" Lee in lhe I25cc Beginner class, one o[ the more crowded divisions. Bauser slaned 0[[ slowly, scoring only a third in lhe first molO, just behind Ross and winner Sam Mabey. Mabey and his Kawasaki ran into problems in lhe second round, struggling through [our circuits and finally pulling into lhe pilS. Bauser quickly took over [rom Mabey and. with Lee only a few feet behind, made his bid [or first place over the followi ng laps. Ross. meanwhile, had gouen tangled up Wilh Caner Hill and by lhe time he worked free was too (ar behind 10 catch the leaders. His finish was good [or second overall behind Bauser and ahead of Lee. Intermediate action was highlight· ed by the three way bauJe [or the lOp spot in the 250cc class as Steve Poyner, Donnie Prado, and Brian Lamben all expressed a desire lo [illlhal posi· tion. Larnbertsomehow accomplished lhe unenviable [eat of running over his own fOOl during the course of lhe second heal and Poyner ran over a speclalor as Prado cruised. When all was done Prado was at the top of lhe heap with Lambert second and Poyner third. Pete Sullivan made one of his infrequent visilS to Austin and defeated Billy Compton and Brian Noblin in lhe I25cc Intermediates. Big bore racing was dominated by David Beckham. • Results MINI JR: 1.
