The rain came and went, and then carne again to stay, but not bad enough to stop the racing or to stop Alan Christian. Christian, sponsored by STP and National Monetary found . himself right at home on the slick muddy track. The wet track requires ~ lower tire pressure and diHerent ridling style well known to the riders Wilh experience in England. Chrisluan came around the track unidentifiable, covered with mud, but his same slyle showed through. John Cook, who was disqualified in the Handicap main for causing a red flag, came out in the Scratch main fast and furious, but unfortunately fell down and ended up last. The Handicap main hosled Mike Mazzacane as winner, with Alan Christian halon his trail for second place. Mike Faria's bike broke leaving him in fifth place. Mazzacane rode oUllhe race having to compensate for mud and keep the door closed on Alan Christian. The Handicap consolation was the same story with mud. Keith Chrisco took home the win. Second Division racing- was pretty calm accept for Pal Hawley, who look Robert Buono into the wall, leaving his body and bike bouncing along. Buono's kill switch didn't work and had him wreslling his bike on the front straighllrying to ShUI il of{. Robin Bourgois, Randy Blevins and Wayne Leutz were heat winners. Bourgeous keep up lhe pace right into the main as he won from his 20 yard starting position. Third Division had it's usual share of crashes, but Walt Farnum and Louis Kreisburg were heat winners and Kreisburg went on to win the main far ahead of the pack. RAsults SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Reichardt romp~, Troudt tromps at Bandimere By Bud Coach MORRISON, CO, SEPT. 21 Those who brave the chilly fall evening to attend the regular Wednesday night speedway races at John Bandimere's Costa Mesa-sized race track got their moneys worth. Chris Reichardt extended his long string of main event victories by winning the Scratch Main and Jimmy "Shazam" Troudt started his string by winning the Handicap Main. Dave Pieper and Lance Darsow had a running gun battle in their scratch semi that resulted in Darsow's exclusion after the finish. Reichardt and Troudt used their Weslake as weapons on each other for a while in their semi. Both survived, but Troudt was a little upset. Judging from the main event results, maybe Troudt should get upsel more often. Brian Hoel and SCOll Ormiston finished 1-2 in their scratch heat with Hoel nipping Ormiston at the line. This would have been an ordinary event despile the many passes and close racing. They never touched each other once in four whole laps! Ordinarily they can't even pit in close proximity without knocking each other over. After the finish they came down the back straight shaking hands. The Match race saw Bill Walsh and Larry Metherd dice for two laps with Walsh nipping Metherd at the line in a giant wheelie. The Handicap Main was filled with long yardage types as Reichardt and Ormiston off the 50, Hoel and Mark Borgman off the 40, and Troudt and Walsh off the 30 all tried to get a run at the tapes. The watchful eye and imposing presence of assistant referee, Frank Manle~, kept lhem all (Top) Gene Woods. John Sandona and Jim Lawson dice. while (below) two riders display two kinds of crashes; a low side and a high side. relativelv honest and the start was beautifu'l with everyone arriving- at the apex of one and two at the same time. For the next five laps, Ormiston tried to push by Borgman and Reichardt on the outside line up against the fence. Ormiston found a slick spot and did a quick 360 while the pack escaped. Reichardt, meanwhile, wasn't having much luck trying to drive around the outside of the Troudt/Hoel skirmish and the Walsh/Borgman ballle. Finally he had to drive it down into the first useable gap that opened up. That was between Hoel and Walsh and thats the way it finished: grinning Troudt in first, Hoel in second and a frustrated Reichardt in' third. The Scratch Main had Troudt, Dave Pieper, and Reichardt lined up in that order while lone Jawa pilot, Ormiston leaned against the wall. A turn four tangle between Dave Pieper and Reicharot broughl out the red flag and loud verbiage from Rei chardt. The restart saw Reichardt get the gale with Ormiston right behind and Troudt in third. Reichardt held on and took the win ahead of Ormiston and Troudt. . • Results seRATCH MAIN: 1. Chris Reichardt (Wesl; 2. Scott Ormiston (Jawl; 3. Jimmy Troudt (Wos); 4. Daye Pieper (Wos).
