Kramer downs Ascot Juniors By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 7 The Mammoth Mountain Motocross lured many racers away from the local tracks with Ascot being just one of the events that had a smaller turnout. Dirt Rider Magazine editor Karel Kramer has been striving for a 500cc Junior victory for some time and tonight he succeeded against an average-sized, nine-man class. Kramer has waged war with most every make of blke underneath him and this time he used a Yamaha as his weapon. Richard Busconi took his Yamaha to the lead with the start of the first molO. Ron Bunn roared aboard his Roost FaclOry Honda four-stroker and followed Busconi. Behind Bunn charged Sean Mitchell on his Kawasaki. It was a busy night for Mitchell who was also entered in the 250cc Junior race. Running in fourth came Kramer who was soon given a good break. Bunn got out of control coming out of the crash wall jumps and slid outon the following corner. Mitchell did a balancing act as he overshot a berm and had one leg off his bike. With Bunn and Mitchell making mistakes it was Kramer who then controlled second place behind Busconi. Bart Harris placed in third with Mitchell still tagging fourth. Mitchell came back strong and took the lead in the final moto. Threatening his position was Kramer. Mitchell was then being attacked by Bunn, who chose the crash wall corner; wh~re he fell in the first round, to slide past Mitchell and take over second. One by one they were sliding past Mitchell, and then it was David Edwards who took a stab at Mitchell but couldn't swing it. Kramer held the lead over Bunn till the two came to the old concession-stand corner and Bunn cranked his thumper and took over the lead. KI;amer settled for second place over Mitchelf and Edwards. Busconi, who won the first round, took a DNF the second moto. Even though Kramer failed to wion either moto, the overall win fell into his hands due to his consistent 2-2 tally. Mitchell had a fine 4-3 tally which earned him second overall. He was also successful in the second di vision of the 250cc Junior class where he took a third place. Bart Haris finished third, Edwards fourth and Bunn fifth. Results MINI JR: 1. Shiloh Tete (YamI; 2. Robert Nickolson (Yam); 3. Jeff Fleming (Yam). MINIINT: 1. Shane Trittler (Hon); 2. McMillen takes Ascot Juniors By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 4 Mid-Cities Honda set up Keith McMillen to ride the fast Honda that is usually piloted by Pro Rob Trone_ This combination did the winning trick as McMillen became the night's winner of the I25cc Junior class in Continental Motosports Club motocross at Ascot. Fighting McMillen in both molOS was Suzuki mounted Duff Whitman who, won the first moto but lost the final bout which gave the overall to McMillen. Whitman got thejumpon the pack in the first molO with McMillen right after him. McMillen was putting the pressure on Whitman but stumbled through the finish section and dropped back several bikelengths. Soon McMillen caught up lo Whitman and worked past him on the corner before the TT jump. It was a two-man race as McMillen held the lead over Whitman. Mark Cahill was in third but was a couple hundred yards behind the top two. With just a few feet to go before the finish flag it was Whitman who slid past McMillen to swipe the lead away. Cahill was third over Many Schneider and Dave Alexander. Alexander surprised both McMillen and Whitman by taking the holeshot in the final moto. This moment of glory was very temporary for Alexander who lost the lead by the time he reached the last crash wall jump. Whitman and McMillen flew by him quickly. Losing about one bikelength was McMillen who stumbled before the TT jump but still remained in second. With one lap to go, Whiteman got out of control on the finish-line section and aUowed McMillen to snatch the lead. Results BO JR DIV I : 1. Robert Nickolson (YamI; 2. Davis tops Ascot 125 Intermediates By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, AUGUST 31 John Davis took his Kawasaki to the overall position in tonight's competitive 125cc Intermediate race_ David had to put up with stiff challenges by Mike Magallanes, who normaUy chalks up the wins at Ascot. MagaUanes took the holeshot but was demoted back to second place when he reached the old-concession stand corner with David being the striking opponent. The two collided with Davis taking the better half. Davis then held the lead with Magallanes in second, who was losing his momemum_ Richard Fleming, on a T&:O Yamaha, swept past Magallanes to take over second place. Magallanes went from first lo third and held off Dan Tinsman and Trey McFarland from Pro-Tee. Magallanes took the sought after holeshot in the final round and led the race umil. he came to the new whoops. A rider in an earlier wave crashed in the whoops and apparently the starter couldn't see the incident and fired off the I25cc Intermediates. so there was a restart. Davis took the holeshot over Magallanes. Davis came to a turn and leI off the throttle which gave Magallanes a chance to dive under Davis and take over the lead. Magallanes went on and took the win ahead of Davis, Arthur Huffer, Mike Hughes and John Posca. • Results BO JR DIY 1: I. Robert Nickolson (Yam); 2. Henry Barbee (SOl); 3. Jody Tapia (Kaw).
