(Below]' Ron Lechien .urvived two miarn.p. and still managed second. I Larry Wosick, riding a Honda. The battle for the lead was tight, but in the end, it was Wosick who wound up with the win. A.J. Whiting put his Yamaha LO the from of the pack at the start of the second semi, but his chances of win· ning ended early after he fell in the whoops, surrendering the lead to Yamaha·mounted Keith Bowen. Mike Larson, on a Honda, took over second while Bill Grossi settled in third on a Yamaha. Bowen, in only his third Pro race ever and his very first Supercross, managed to hold 0(( Larson and Suzuki's George Holland. Last-chance qualifier Holland holeshot the last-ehance qualifier start, but the Suzuki pilot dropped out during the second lap, which gave Whiting the lead. Eaton put heavy pressure on the leader, actually a bit too much pressure. The Maieo pilot overshot a berm and took out a couple of haybails in the pro· cess, which cost him his qualifying hopes. Whiting, back from his semifinal crash, inherited enough of a lead to take the win. Mini M.in 12 . There was hea~y-dutyracing in the Mini Expert class, and at the start of theirone-and-only moto, it was Hon· da's Mike Healey who stole the hole· shot ahead of Suzuki's Scott Brown and Yamaha-mounted Eddie Hicks. Hicks found a way around Brown during the second lap, then he set after the leader. The ·Yamaha pilot reeled in Healey and the two duelled for the next two laps. During these two laps, they swapped the lead several times, but Hicks finally secured the position and started to pull away from Healey. Hicks took the win ahead of Healey and Anthony Pasqua· louo. Final jeU Hicks surprised everyone and grabbed the holeshot ahead of Cantalou pi, Glover, Fisher, Lechien, Reid. Tarantino and Phil Larson. About halfway through the first lap, Camaloupi Sluffed his Yamaha underneath Hicks in a tight turn, clipping Hick's front wheel. Hicks almost went down, but he managed to save it. During the second lap, Cantaloupi went down, dropping back LO 17th. "I caught a haybaleon the second lap. I came out of the groove and it was right there," Cantaloupi later explained. "I guess somebody hit it the lap before and I just nailed the hay bale and went over the baTS." Hicks retook the lead while Glover and Lechien couldn't decide over second. By the third lap, Glover had taken the top spot away from Hicks while Lechien followed in second. Through the triple jumps, Glover lost control of his mount, but he managed LO recover without losing much time LO Lechien. A few seconds later, Glover and Lechien tangled and Lechien almost fell 0(( his bike. He never actually hit the ground, but he lost a lot of time dropping back LO fifth. Hicks continued in second ahead of Fisher, Reid and Lechien. Fisher and Reid began LO duke it out ove, third, and over the four jumps Reid passed Fisher. A lap later, Lechien, who was hot on the gas, also slipped past Fisher and set out after Reid. Reid and Lectllen started LO make up some ground on Hicks as the two Yamaba riders battled. The Reid/Lechien duel carried them by Hicks by the 10th lap. Soon after, Lechien tried LO make a move on Reid through the studder bumps, but Reid got sideways and the two went down. "I tried to use ~echien's line throu!1;h the whoops because I thought they might be smoother," said Reid later. "But I was wrong. I cut across to myoid line but Lechien was using it. The next thing I knew, my face smacked against Ronnie's bike and now my face is real sore." Hicks cruised by the downed ride.rs, again retaking second. It was then a race to get the bi kes restarted, with Lechien geuing the advantage. Reid recovered with a broken clutch lever and a badly bruised eye. Fisher rlJ saw his chance LO catch Reid, but he overshot a turn and went down, Lechien caught up LO, and passed Hicks through the four jumps. blia.l there was not enough time LO cal Glover. Glover had gained almos~ .,. half-lap lead and the only problem he had was that his left boot had come completely undone by thf second lap. '1 Meanwhile. Camaloupi was h3' ing an excellent ride after working his way up to fifth ahead of Ryan, Todd Harrel and Tarantino. In Iiiie end, Glover easily took the win ahead of Lecb ien, Hicks and a bruised Re#i Cantaloupi finished fifth with a badly mangled rear wheeL ( "This is one of those races tha1 worked out very well for me," commented Glover after the race. "I tri.l:d LO get around Cantaloupi. but hi went down real hard and I ran ovd' his bike. Then Ronnie (Lechien) and I got real close and we tangled in t1le following turn. I just tried LO holdJJi¥ line and he went inside and hit aha r bale and went down. After that it got a lot easier." • Results FINAL: 1. Brae Glowr (Vam); 2. Ron Lechien (Vaml; 3. Jell HIcU (Hon); 4.
