Dakota -loIIth Dakota- Beckham, Lambert tops at Austin night MX 'By Joe Milian AUSTI ,TX, SEPT. 9 Brian Lambert, the newest addition to the Kasson Yamaha Racing Team, continued his progress through the ranks of -250cc competition tonight, riding [or the first time as an Intermediate and scoring something o[ an upset over David Beckham. Lambert posted back-to-back wins, coming £rom behind in both motos tado so. His hard-charging, squareoff-with-gusto sty Ie o[ riding was more than Beckham could contend with and he was forced to settle for second. Since this was his first outing 'on a YZ250 after switching from Ronda, Beckham might have had some problems adjusting to his new mount. In any event, these two riders 'Stlould provide some exciting clashes in weeks to come. At the rate they are ~mproving, it is conceivable that they 'Could continue their duel into the Expert division in the near future. Another competitor who moved up in class this week was Austin's Shawn Clevenger. A[ter weeks o[ tormenting the Beginner class, Clevenger made his debut as a Novice a successful one, knocking 0[£ perennial winner Robert Tiemann in the 125cc class. Pre-race favorite Brad Burnie had a disappointing evening, finishing well behind Tiemann. I The EXpl;Tts engaged in their weekly session of [un and games as they -combined forces to provide the spectators with the greatest amount of entertainment [or their money. As usual, there were no disappointments for those who like their motocross wild and wooly. Jerry farmer wrestled the lead [rom Frank Tello in the first 'tum, with Jack Beckham in tow. -Beckham' dispatched Tello in lap three and then got past Farmer the next time around. All went well [or ' -Beckham until the eighth lap when fie grabbed too much throttle coming {)lit of a turn and went sideways in ffont o[ Farmer. Farmer applied the center punch to Beckham, racking up Tello in the process. Tommy Pavelka oblingingly guided his Husky by the tangled trio and made the two-lap charge to the flag. Beckham remounted quickly, but could not pass the wily Pavelka, . who seemed to sprout outriggers whenever Beckham made a bid to go around. Bill Kelly [ollowed Beckham and also got a short-lived holeshot to open the second moto. Tello took over the lead in a big way and did some superb berm work in keeping Beckham at bay.
