TEN YEARS AGO The United States hosted its first-ever International Six Days Trial in the New England woods. When all was said and done. Czechoslovakia had won the World Trophy as had been expected. The big surprise was in the Silver Vase competition, where the Husky-mounted U.S. team of Ron Bobn. Dick Burleson. Ed Schmidt and Malcolm Smith scored America's first win in ISDT competition. The annual America versus the rest of the world challenge. known coloquially as the Trans-AMA MX Series. opened in Springville, New York. Suzuki's Roger DeCoster, the 500cc MX World Champ, was on hand but lost out on the overall win 10 European ex-patriate Pierre Karsmakers (Yam) when Karsmakers won the final moto. Husky-mounted Mike Hanwig was lOp native Yank at third overall, followed by Dutch dentist Gemt Wolsink on a Maico. Bultaco rider Tom Rapp won the 250cc Suppon class. San Francisco's Golden Gate Fields hosted its first-ever mile race which was won by Jim Rice on a HarleyDavidson. Second went 10 Randy Scott on another Harley, followed by Triumph pilot John Hateley. The Junior main event saw John Gennai taking the checkers first on a Triumph, followed by the Yamaha of Rick Hocking. Mike Gillman rode a pair of Yamahas 10 wins in the 250 and 500cc Intermediate classes at a CMC night motocross at Irwindale. Gillman defeated Skip Keeley (Mai) in the former class; David Vail (Hus) in the laller. Montesa pilot Marland Whaley sewed up the number one plate in American Trials Association competition with a win at Saddleback Park. Ossamounted Mark Eggar finished second behind Whaley in the Masters class, followed by George Smith (Bul) and Bernie Schreiber (Bul). The Sunland Shamrocks held their 18th annual D-37 desen race, and Husqvarnas finished 1-2 in the hands of Mitch Mayes and A.C. Bakken. T.hird overall went 10 the 250 Bultaco of Larry Pfutzenreuter, and Larry Roseler finished first Trailbike on a Harley-Davidson Baja. Nonon Villiers Triumph announced plans 10 close its Meriden plant in early 1974 as an economy move. Spokesman said the move would not effect the company's Birmingham and Wolverhampton plants. Mark Mason and Scot Harden teamed upona Husky towin theS.N.O.R.E. 250 off-road race in Nevada. Rick Owens and Danny Davis finished second on another Husky, followed by the Yamaha of Tom Smith and Terry Davis.
