II Maico-mounted, Wheelsmithsponsored Grant Palenske picked up his second enduro win in a row at this year's Duralube-sponsored California Racing The event was a contest to the finish as Husqvarna rider Tom Webb lost the overall by a mere one point. In the special 36 mph test on loop two, Palenske zeroed the check, losing only seconds. "Webb was running on number 86 and hit the tie-breaker check at 87.00, one second off a zero mark which dropped him to second overall. Palenske turned in the only zero score of the 70-mile event, dropping only 43 seconds. Billy Huston took the overall honors for the one-loopers by "outlasting second-place finisher Ronald Piau by three seconds. The enduro was located again in a newer area in the Anderson Dry Lake vicinity. According to the route charts, the enduro was going to be a short and sweet event because the heat was pretty bad. The 30-mile first loop took only an hour and a half and the starting time was 7 a.m. Fast and smooth was the make-up of loop two. Miles of sandwashes were included at30 and 36 mph. The course started at 24 mph for 18 miles _ up a rocky powerline road, then dropped into a tricky sandwash where check five was .located The controversial check was thrown out after a mileage check was done by the officials, which saved a lot of burnt riders. Traveling across the open desert, the course led into the moon rocks. The 30 mph section had every rider guessing a check was bound to appear but not until we scurried across the desert into more moon boulders did the tie breaker appear. Three easy miles at 18 mph and then it was time to "hook up." Three and six-tenths miles at 36 mph meant only one thing, special test. Thirty-eight riders lost only one point and some seconds. A 250cc A • rider, Robert Burtis, followed Webb's 1.38 score with a 1.51. Fourth overall went to Kenny Kamp (1.57), then ~~Dave Bender (1.61), Kurt Butler (1.64), - Randy Daugherty (1.71), Bob Keirns (1.76), Richard Griffin (1.77) and Gregg Lusher (1.80) finished out the " top 10.
