hopeless for Cantley, but after the Kawasaki pilot passed Palmer, he surprised everyone by turning lap times faster than all but two of the Pros; and in doing so, he reeled in Combs. Two laps from the finish, Cantley passed Combs and held him orr to the checkered nag, despite heavy and desperate pressure from the Yamaha pilot. Kohara took third followed by Rincon Kawasaki's Lance Gorton in fourth. Go(') 00 0') Results Scott Moore Iud. eventual winner Jame. Stephen. in Riverside action. Three more for Roloff at RiversIde RR By Lori Tyson RIVERSIDE, CA, SEPT. 11 Earl Roloff took three wins at the American Federation of Motorcyclists' last Riverside race of the year, to further stretch his lead in the overall poims standings. In the 750cc Open Modified Production class, he piloted his KZ750 to the win with a second overall, right behind Open class Bob Reinen. Bruce McFarland had a duel on his hands. Novice Doug Humer, in only his second road race ever, put some very nice moves on McFarland and generally gave him a hard time for the number-two Open spot. McFarland was ahead at the line leaving Humer with the third place trophy. The 450cc Stock Production was a tight race with Mike Morrow, Ray Straka and Pete Carroll going at it for most of the eight-lap race. The three riders stayed in tight formation umil the last lap when Carroll dropped out with unknown problems, while Morrow and Straka continued the battle. But, when Straka got tangled up in some tra££ic, Morrow took advantage and hot-footed it to the line for the win. In the 600cc Stock Production, there was the usual good show with a five way battle for the lead between Jim Vreeke, Todd Brubaker, Marty Vogel, Jim Poet and Fnmk Mazur. By the fourth lap, Vreeke and Brubaker were still up from, but the other three men had dropped back a few yards with Vogel leading the way. But when Vogel locked up his rear tire and nearly went down in a rough section of track, Poet and Mazur forged ahead to finish third and fourth respectively with Vogel just a step behind. Brubaker had finished first, with Vreeke on his tail in second. Results 24 OPEN TWIN: ,. Tony Guest (Duel; 2. Earl Camp· bell (Due). 750 TWIN: ,. Micheel Johnson (Yom); 2. (Hon). _0 Cantley catches victory at DeAnzaMX By Mich.el Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT. 11 As summer comes to a close and temperatures drop, the racing gets hotter at DeAnza Cycle Park. Today in the 125cc Intermediate class, Pomona Valley Kawasaki's Danny Cantley took the overall victory after a come-from-behind, second-moto win. O'Neal's Tommy Combs (Yam) outdragged nine other 125cc Intermediates to the first turn in molO one. Following Combs was Jimmy Palmer (Kaw), and Cantley. On lap twO, Brian Curtis (Kaw) passed Kohara.for fourth while the three-way battle for first continued. On lap four, Cantley blasted by Palmer and did the same to Combs one lap later. Meanwhile, Palmer's mOlOr mounts on his Suzuki were getting looser with each lap, forcing him back lo fifth place. The Cantley/Combs duel continued throughout the fifteen-lap molO with Cantley taking the win by a slim margin. Curtis took third followed by Kohara in fourth. Cantley's first moto was a tough act lo follow, but he did so with a spectacular holeshot followed by an equally unspectacular front end washout, which dropped him to last place. Combs was leading with Palmer, Kohara, and Cycle Works' Andy Kaplan (Suz) in hot pursuit. Cantley, riding WFO with no room for error, passed three riders on the first lap, Kaplan on the second and Kohara on the third. By the fifth lap, Cantley was pressuring Palmer for second while Combs was fifteen seconds ahead of both green machines, riding a smooth, controlled race. It looked PEE WEE: ,. Leo Ford (Voml; 2. This was a significant event as it was the first qualifier for the upcoming CRC Amateur Supercross Championships lo be held at San Diego Stadium on November 7. Last Sunday at Saddleback, Brian Felix lost the lead in the 125cc Novice class when he ran into a bank along a straight. Felix crashed his Yamaha which resulted in compound fracture to his foot. Witb Felix being hospitalized today's 125cc class was without its top competitor and most likely will be for the rest ofthe year. Racin' Jason Davenport, from Rooster Racing, was the top man in the day's 125cc Novice class. Excitement was seen in the first moto when Gary Carivau led the race with Davenport right behind him. On the very last corner, just before the finish nag, Davenport slid past Carivau to take away the lead for the win. Carivau was second over Bill Waltman and Jerry Wert. In the final round Davenport failed to get a good start and was back in seventh place. Tom Holt took the lead over Van Nuys Cycle's Curtis Dougherty, Rob Dees and Carivau. Disastrously, Carivau fell after the whoops just past the score tower. To make matters worse, B.). Millspaugh couldn't avoid Carivau and nailed him. Amazingly, Carivau wasn't injured and picked up his Suzuki and continued lo ride. Holding back Davenport was' Bambino Tapia, who had red scarfs waving from his grips. Soon Davenport advanced past Tapia. When they came through the finish line the position changed radically By Pam Hardin PHOENIX. AZ. SEPT. 3 stakes this weekend at Canyon. The first start had Patterson hitting the first turn ahead of Lancer and Apache Honda rider Scott Stallard, Sunnyslope's Bobby White and Super Seer rider Scott Keyes. By the third lap. Patterson,Stallard and White went line for line while Keyes fell behind in a comfortable fourth. The next lap had Stallard make the lead his by an inside move around a wall berm. White found the same opening on the next lap and moved past for second. With three laps left in the race, White slid by Stallard at the bottom suicide. It was apparent that Stallard was having some problems when he was overtaken by Patterson, who, just a half a track before, was eight seconds Iiehind. Stallard said his broken front brake was the cause of the major slowdown that left him in third. Behind Stallard was Keyes and Discount Cycle's Larry Witt. The next heat turned even hotter than the first. Stallard led off the gate, but Patterson slipped under and made his getaway to the second turn with White close behind. White and Stallard tangled at the bottom of suicide which left White on the ground for a DNF. After the collision, White's father thought Stallard intentionally ran into his son, Bobby refused to comment aboul his motos, but his [alher acted as his spokesman. "He was t-boned by Scott," he said, "II's as simple as that." Stallard strongly denied any malicious intent, as did the race officials. The facts remain that the final score was Patterson taking the over-
