MX/ST By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CA, SEPT I Jerome Heiberger took home the big Pro purse at the Continental Motorsports Club's Thursday night at Baylands, 32 while Rick Hocking made his umpteenth comeback on the newly constructed one-sixth-mile cushion oval that will accomodate flat track guys and, very soon, speedway racing. Thursday night at the'south end of the Bay is now motorcycle night and the crowd was way up, along with the rider turnout. Fans went from the first round of 250cc Pro motocross, at a dead run, to the flat track side to watch the main events, capped by Hocking's tremendous run on the Knight Can-Am. The first round of motocross saw some surprises, with Thea Bernhard winning the first round over Craig Christian and Paul Duchscher, with Tony Flores crashing while up front. In the second round, it was a knock- . down drag-out fight for first between Duchscher and Flores, with the two YZ riders displaying their.fine talents in front of an excited audience. Duchscher took the win and the overall. Bernhard held on for a third and . second overall, with Flores recording a 4-2 for third over Christian, 2-4. Rich Mythen and Eric Mashbir fought for the first few laps of the 250cc Pro show, with Jerome Heiberger coming through the pack to pass and take the lead on the third go-round, riding Mike Lane's backup Honda. John Gardner was hard charging as well, but got in a tangle with the leaders and wound up sixth while Heiberger got away for the win over Mythen and Christian. In the second round Gardner split the scene early and not even Heiberger could get close, but the Contra Costa Honda-sponsored Heiberger took the overall with a 1-2 over Mythen's 2-!l, with third to Gardner, 6-1, over Greg Pennington, 5-4, and Christian, !l-9. Within the last three weeks the Baylands crew has put in a new flat track; a cushion one-sixth-mile just right for both short track and speedway racing. Suzuki pilot Billy Arbogast took the 250cc Novice trophy home with him'as he combined a fourth-place (inish in the (irst molO with a win the second time out for the overall.
