After taking easy wins in all fourof - his preliminary races, Bast and the Justice Brothers/Riverside Mitsubishi/Oakley Weslake started the Handicap main on the 40. Fomana based Ron Blanton came off the 20 to take the initial lead over Hollywood stuntman Kurt SLTommer. SLTommer dove to the inside of Blanton in turn three on the opener for the lead. Bast, who already had beaten Sam Ermolenkoand Dubb Ferrell from the 40at the start, stalked and passed Blamon for second near the end of the second circuit. The yellow and white clad rider then relieved Strom mer of the lead on the next lap while Blanton crashed with England bound Ermolenko as they battled for third. Bast, who displayed perfect form all night, then put it away as he moved out from the pack to win by a huge margin. Ferrell rallied late in the race to finish second while, Swindon bound, Mike Faria got by Strom mer i(l the final corner for third when the latter's motor failed. Bast. who scored the lastlMS clean sweep on April 14, 1982 over a field that included someone named Penhall, proved he could do no wrong when he drew the pole for the Scratch main. Ferrell came out turn two with Kelly Moran in third and a redhot John Sandona getting the unlucky number-four spot. Bast put this one to bed early as he got the gate and opened up a three-length lead over the pack on lap one. Sandona, gambling on the outside, momentarily got by Moran at the end of the first revolution only to have the diminutive rider streak back by as they roared into the first corner on lap two. While ,Bast was alone ou.t front. the rest of the pack stayed tightly bunched in a ballie for the minor placings. In the end it wa the "Babe Ruth" of American Speedway by five lenglhs over Ferrell, Moran and Sandona. As Bast came past the staning line on his slow-down lap, he outdid all of the riders who throw their goggles in the stands in a big way. Instead Bast dosed out the bIg night in a big way, he threw his helmet to the fans. Eddie Castro closed out the 1983 Second division action with a surprising win from the 20. CaSLTO (Dean &Dave's 76/B&F Import/Chum's) had his four-valve Jawa suffer mechanical ills at the line and wa forced to switch to his two-valve. Atthat point, most people ruled "Fast" Eddie out of contention. Robin Bourgeois beat CasLTol off the line at the stan and held the poim position umil Castro breezed by at the end of the second revolution. Pat "Hollywood" Hawley took Bourgeois for the runnerup spot on lap three and quickly closed the gap on Castro. Unfortunately "Hollywood" went down on the next circuit forcing Bourgois to lay it down, causing a red flag giving the win to Castro over Bourgeois and Leutz. Colorado's Mike Golightly (MJF Plating) put the new Maely motor through its paces and easily won his second IMS division three main of the season. Mike Coniglio took the runnerup spot for the second week in a row while Frank Steiner claimed third. Newcomer Josh Larsen took the lead on lap two and raced away from the pack to win his first ever IMS Junior main. Following Larsen who rode a perfect race, were Gijo Dowd and Bill Hamill.
