-Canada-Northern Californi.Northern Ne Family feud at Gold Cup final By Brian Barnes OLYMPIA, WA, AUG. 7 ~ 00 0") With the last race of the 1983 Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup .on tap today at Thurston Gray's :ORV Sports Park, several very interesting points biutles shaped up ,between amateur entrants, while a number oE other riders had already clinched their gold cup laurels and hose lo take a rest or race in .the .Ponca City Nationals. . The most interesting battle came. between the Yamaha-mounted bro,ther combos oE JeH and Bryan Birkestol along with the Williams duo oE Scott and Mike. The older brothers, . Jeff and Scott, competed in the 250cc A Class while Bryan and Mike Eought it out in the 125cc A class. Scott and Jeff were the pair to beat at all nine races, with each rider spending an almost equal amount of time up front. The last race, however, belonged to Jeff as he went on to a double-mow sweep for first overall. Bob Monroe, Charlie Mitchell and Marshall Favre were second, third, and Eourth while Williams' fiEthplace finish left him a mere four points shy of the elder Birkestol's total. f The I25cc A Class has been mostly 'a lOSS-up for winners the entire series, .but Bryan and Mike always Einished in the top five lo keep their points battle the closest of the series. Kevin Webster was on top oE the overall win wi.th Suzuki-mounted Rudy Smith scoring second. Mike had beaten Bryan the first mow with a fourth while BirkeslOl was right behind in fiEth. The second round found Mike in front of Bryan until an unfortunate spill gave Bryan Eourth place in the moto and third overall while Mike took seventh in the moto and fourth overall, The points ended up with the Birkestol camp collecting another series championship as Bryan edged out the younger Williams 138 lo 137, The 80cc B Class found Jason McCormick winning both motos but coming up two points shy of Shane West's Kawasaki Eor the series, while Honda-mounted Bruce Barnes took.a double-molO sweep of a 45-rider 125cc B Eield only to come up eight points behind Lloyd Young's Yamaha.
