Dennis Robinson, 1981 Norll~al Champion ran into bad luck in his very first heat, breaking the lape, ~nd ruining his chances for a perfect h C9re. NorCal number one rider Paul :.Orlandi also had a bad night, placing cond in his first two heats, but faJ,ling in his third to spoil any chance 9-§: may had had. o' It all came down to the final heat, §lumber 20. It was Ingels and David Faria Jr., both with perfect scores. Faria was in the pole position, next ",,10 Ingels, reserve Robert Curry re,-,placed Robinson in the number three pot and another reserve Craig Eistins . ),Vas on the wall replacing Paul Orlandi. Both the Robinson and Orlandi machines were suffering from mechanical problems. As the gate shot up, ~ngels shot into the lead, and there as little doubt that he would do anything but hold it to the checkered ~ag. Faria, who excels in Scratch ,;s:ompetition, was forced to settle for _ econd in heat number 20 and second liin the championship. As the scores }Vere tallied, it was discovered that I .om Ferris and last year's Rookie of he Year, Steve Crawford, were tied for third. In the runoff Ferris took the £}Vin; a nice way to end his birthday :which he was celebrating tonight. b Bart Bast was honored during the ,ider's parade with a plaque naming lpim Rookie of the Year.
