I Craig Ingels leads on the way to his NorCal Championship win. Dubb Ferrell came back from third place in the semi 1O win the handicap main. Ferrell, sponsored by Cidy Products, Arai, Vera's and Oakley, pulled off an excellent pass over Bill Meister to take the win. Leni Faas captured the handicap consolation win by holding off the persistant Alan Christian. Ed Castro, a fairly fresh first-division rider, won his heat and the semi, but fell down in tbe main event and took last place. Second-division racing went smooth and easy. Mark Weaver, Tom WallOn and Wayne Leutz won the heats. Wal ton, sponsored by Two KenChu, and Walton Roofing, has been doing a lot of hanging around on crash walls lately, but Friday night he made a fearless move out by the wall to pass the pack and win the main. Third division started with two crashes on the first lap of the the first heat. Jim Clausman and Don Butler survived the heat races as winners. Steve Murray, sponsored by C.M. Tools, Malcolm Smith and K&N Filters, took the main event. Don Butler and Murray got too close in the main and Butler was left in the dirt for last place. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Mike Bast; 2. Bast blasts to San Berdoo gold By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 7 Michael Bast continued to warm up for the September 21 California State Championship by taking his second Scratch 32 main in a row at Inland Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday. Bast, who has won the State Championship five times, came into Wednesday's action with an enviable 63% win average in Scratch racing at IMS in ) 983. After winning his heat and taking second in the semi, the veteran racer from Perris drew the number two slot for the Scratch main. Bast (Justice Brothers/Riverside MitsubishiiOakley Wes) then jumped into the lead in the main over Sam Ermo-Ienko,-j-obn Cook-and KeUy-Moran: Ermolenko drew even in turn one as he rode it in hard, but Bast fought him off and took the lead for good on the back chute. Cook raced by Ermolenko on the inside in turn three on the opener with the latter pulling even one lap later but then doing a wheelie on the front chute straight, effectively ending his second-place aspirations. Cook chased Bast over the final two laps but was unable to close the gap and finished a dose second. After the race, Bast and Cook shook hands as they rode down the back chute, apparently putting their recent differences behind them. Popular KeUy Moran (STP/UNO/ Arai Godd) picked up his first IMS main win of the season when he captured the Handicap gold. Dennis Briggs beat fellow 10-yard-line starter Greg Ayers to the first corner and stayed in the lead until Ayers went by in the third corner. Moran, coming from the 30, used the outside to take Briggs [or third on lap two and then got Ayers for the lead on the third circuit. Mike Faria and Alan Christian then moved past Ayers and set their sights on the streaking Moran. Both riders closed the gap, but they fell two lengths short of the "Wizard of Balance" at the checkered flag. After two restarts, "Super Hot" Jeff Springman (Bill's PipeslTroy Lee Design/Pro Circuit Wes) won the red-flag shortened Second Division main. Coming off last week's wins at Lancaster, IMS (Third Division) and a second at Costa Mesa, Springman found himself moved up 1O Second Division. Starting on the zero, Springman took the lead over Alan Davidson and Wayne Leutz. As Springman was opening it up at the front of the pack, Tom Walton was charging from the back. On the second go-round, Walton shot by Leutz for third and then blasted by "Kiwi AI" for second. Walton then closed the gap on Springman, who was starting to have bike problems. Walton passed the leader only to have another rider fall, causing a red flag. The race reverted back to the last completed lap with Springman, who had been leading at the time, taking the win over a dejected Walton. Jim Clausman (Wes) passed Frank "The Stilt" Steiner on lap one and went on to win his third IMS Division Three main of the season. Steiner was second until his motor went sour, moving Lou Kreisberg up to the show spot. Kreisberg then gave it away when- he took a soil sample, First-year rider Jeff Springman pocketed a cool $300 after scoring 15 points and taking the win in the main over Wayne Leutz at the Antelope Valley Fair Thursday night. The first two events were less than artistic after they had to be restarted several times due to the muddy conditions and tight narrow corners. After event two; which saw several riders sliping, sliding and spinning before and after the green flag at only fivemph, officials called for the blade to scrape off the mud. Joe Kreisberg took event three in somewhat better conditions. Springman (Bill's PipeslTroy Lee Wes) displayed some class C style as he two-wheeled it to an easy win in event four. Pre-race favorite Ed Castro broke in turn one during lap one, in event six, leaving him with no points after two rides and effectively eliminating his main event hopes. Springman, who won the Third Division main at San Bernardino the previous night, got a big break in event eight when they got a restart after Springman tangled with Lou Kreisberg. Making it back to the restart with his clutch grip and center section heavily taped, Springman again roared away from the pack to win by a large margin. Kreisberg, on the other hand, had problems all night with the tight track. He often went between the haybales and outof the track in tum two and then rejoined the action in turn three. Springman came right back to win event nine, but he was overshadowed by "Kiwi" Alan Davidson. Davidson amazingly got up after two falls in the race and still finished second. The feat was amazing in that there were no red flags and all four riders finished. Leutz and Steve Murray thrilled the crowd with a spectacular seesaw battle that saw Murray win a photo finish, in event 17. Event 18 matched Castro and Springman, who took the lead from Castro on lap two. Castro came back to reclaim the lead on the final lap, but Castro looped it in the final corner, allowing Springman to breeze back by for his fifth win. Murray defeated Dave Wendlandt and Chris Mistretta in a runoff for the final spot in the main. Springman, being high point man, had his choice of lane positions for the main and parked his battered Weslake in the number two hole. The young Norco resident got the gate followed by Joe Kreisberg, Murray and Leutz. Murray tried to go around the outside to ~t by Kr~isberg, but was blocked on the back chute. When Kreisberg went' up to block Murray, Kreisberg left me inside open and Leutz lOok advantage, flying into second. Leutz closed the gap on the leader on laps two and three, but the final circuit was I Springman as he took the win by Iil lengths over Leutz. Murray got I!Y Kreisberg for third at the finish. Faria wins Ventura Track Championship By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, AUG. 30 After winning 16 trophies In 1981, Lance King didn't sho~ up for the last race which ga-Je Steve Lucero the Track Championship. Last year, IO-time winner Mike Faria missed the call, and Rick Miller won the track title. This year, Faria not only showed up but he showed his back to the other riders during the races as he ran away fi.~ times to earn a perfect score of 15. Sam Ermolenko, who got knocked off by Rob Pfetzing in his last ride, ended up tied with Bobby Schwartz for second. There was no runoff. Pfetzing was next with a dozen points, followed by Lucero with II. Faria did it with his usual strategy - he outgated everybody. In his first ride, for example, he was two lengths ahead before his main competitor, Buddy Robinson, could even get out of the gate. Faria's toughest challenge came In event 10, when he went head to head with Lucero, Pfetzing and Schwarllz. All were still in the running for the title at this point, and Pfetzing was unbeaten. Lucero, off the pole, gOt the gate and won the race to turn two, seconds before Faria passed all thTee riders on the outside. After turn three, Faria had the win in the bag. Schwartz bumped Pfetzing, nearly sending Pfetzing over the handlebars, and leaving him in last place for his only loss of the night. Schwartz passed Lucero and came in second. The decider came in Event 19 when Faria met Ermolenko, also with a perfect score. Ermolenko's nine poirlts also included a come-from-behind, crowd-pleasing win over Schwartz after being the last to leave the gate. The tie was quickly broken after Faria got another great gate and although Ermolenko kept it close for a lap, Faria still won easily. Pfetzing won for the fourth time in his final ride, putting Ermolenko into a tie with 1980 champ Schwartz. In Second Division racing, Pat Hawley made a strong case for a D·I ride in '84 as he won the D-2 Track Championship - just like he did back in '81. He came from behind 0 pass Randy Roscamp and win his heat. Then he got a good gate off tlie pole to win his semi. Even though Mark Dwyer closed to within a bikelength on the last lap, Hawley held on for the win. Ventura local Walt Farnum'was third. • Results OVERALL: 1.
