By Kenneth Stein ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 4 Revenge was sweet for Warren Reid as he took top honors in Continental Motorsport Club's Trick Racing Gasl.Pro-Tee-sponsored Four-Stroke Championship. Riding on Saddleback's Baja course on a White Bros.-prepped Yamaha, Reid picked up CMC's exclusive four-stroke plaque and most of the purse in the Open Pro class. It didn't start out like a good race day for Reid. After a poor start in the first molO, he found hmself running sixth after one lap in tbe nine-man field. Don Griewe's White Bros. Yammie led Ricky Johnson's Pro-Tecmassaged Yamaha for the first lap. Then Johnson set the controls 10 "gone," and that was that. Reid wasted no time picking off riders, and on the seventh lap caught Micky Dymond on a mostly stock borrowed Yamaha for second. Picking off mortal riders is one thing. Catching Johnson is another. Although Reid closed the gap IOward the end, Johnson's lead proved insurmountable. Reid holeshot the second mow while John on ran into starting-gate trouble. It took just over two laps lor Ricky 10 pull up behind Reid. The pair held their own little race. well in front of third-placed Griewe. The dust didn't bother Johnson. It did bother his bike, and that bothered him. His air filter, which apparently wasn't cleaned after the first molO, caught the brunt of Reid's tactics. His bike began sputtering just when he needed it most. The best Johnson could do was chase Reid's bike all the way to the checkers. Reid acknowledged that his bike, 100 began running rough near the end, but added with a mile, "I'm just glad) got revenge for the last one." The 500cc Pro class featured a pair . of riders from the Open Pro cia s: Honda-mounted Gary Jones, and David Gerig, on Pro Circuit's crick new Husky with a two-stroke lower end, and no oil pump. The pair finished both molOs 1-2, with Gerig on lOp twice. Third place in the first molO wel1lto former Japanese molOcross ~hampion Koji Ma uda, on a Suzuki whose engine started life as a DR unit, in a frame with spare 125 and 250RM suspen ion pans. Unfortunately, Koji didn't stan the second molO. butlhe audience got to see him in aClion again, as he twice deslroyed the Vet Masters class. Third overall in the 500cc class went to "Mr. Bill" Jewell, on Moto Meister's Can-Am Sonic. O'Neal's O'Neal-sponsored rid cleaned up twice in the all-Honda150-200cc Junior class, too, beating teammate Frank Schetli"i to the flag each time. Stephanie Jones, the lone woman in the class, and one of four of the Jones clan, finished a healthy fiftlr overall after bailing in the first turn of the fir t moto. The oldest bike on the track was the BSA of Old Timer Master Chuck "Feets" Minen, who wrestled it around fast enough for first overall in his class. Feets then hopped over to the Sidecar class and drove SCOLI Whitney home to a respectable fifth. Top honors in that group belonged to the teamof Schnoor/Langosh, who held off repeated attempts to take the lead from the Whitney/Melillo pair in the second mow. OPEN PRO: 1. Warren Reid (Yam): 2. Keith O'Neal's Honda oUlclassed the IO-rider field with two firsts in the Mini class. Other mem bers of the racing Jones family were the aforementioned Gary, little brother Jason, who rode Mini and papa Don, who took a third overall riding Gary's bike in the Old Timer Sportsman class behind the Yamathumpers of Irwin Moon and Ron Fry. • Results
