Plrtill list include.: Frlml./lork./.hocks/.wing- I went to Daytona's Jim France and obtained a copy of NASCAR's rule book and applied it to motorcycles. It works. I've calIed for a change to modified production bikes; requiring the big four (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha) to manufacture at least 1,000 to 2,000 units, and the European manufacturers such as Husky, KTM, etc. to make available a lesser number to the general public. The 'modified production' part comes in because I don't feel aftermarket man· ufacturers who make good products should be excluded. The main thing there is that the aftermarket piece be available to alI at a reasonable cost. Changes like that could be monitored by a tech committee." Wayne Moulton, AMA director of professional racing, worked with the Pro MX Rules Board and has submitted a resolution to the manufacturers concerned, asking them to please consider the proposal. Reportedly, Honda is against the change, Kawasaki is basicalIy for it, and Suzuki is also with the exception of Supercross where they would like to continue to use works bikes. '" feel we must give the privateer rider a shot in the arm or we're going to see motocross go away," said Clark. "The use of stock machinery would enable a privateer to pull up next to say Glover, Bar· nett, Ward or Bailey and know they're on equal machinery. That certainly isn 'tthe case today. Every area of this country has one, two or more hot riders who could hold their own on stock bikes; let's give them a chance and get motocross on an upswing again." ermsIgH18nks/lenders/cylinders/wheel./seets/ ignition. Honda feel. the present crop of 600cc two-stroke GP road racers would be far superior to 760cc four-strokes. The well has fallen on the fastest section of the bankillg, where Superbike and Formula One machines easily top 160 mph, and blocks the entire lane... We're told the wall will be fixed prior to the Sep18mber 10 WERA National Endurance round at the Texas fec:iIity. Events at Texas World Speedway are run by the Central Road Racing Club under WERA sanction, and a CRRC spokesperson said the start snafu at the last race was due to lack of communication between the two organizations. The .poke.person also defended the scoring of the event which drew saveral rider protests. Das Motorrad, a German motorcycle magazine, has created quite a stir in the industry with an article about fail ures of PirelIi Phantom tires. The article describes how several German motorcyclists experienced tread separation while running at high speeds. Two riders were reported to be riding "permanently at fullthrottie, i.e. at a speed of 220 kmh (136 mph)" when both of their rear tires, PirelIi V-rated Phantoms, started chunking. The article continues and reports on tests conducted on machines at the Technical Control Association in Munich, Germany. There, five Phantom tires reportedly alI started to suffer tread separation from the carcass at high speed. The first tire tested broke down while the machine was duplicating a running speed of 124 mph, three failed during the first minutes at 136 mph, while the fifth tire tested lasted 12 minutes at 136 mph, according to the magazine. Cary Hassbaum, director of marketing for Sierra Motorcycle Products, said, "Sierra is a warehouse distributor of Dunlop, Metzeler, Pirelli and Continental motorcycle ·tires ... which we distribute nationally. Although the percentage of 'defective' returns for these premium brands of tires is quite low, Pirelli. which is by far our highest volume tire line, consistently averages the lowest return rate of all our tire brands. Further· more, of these returns, never have we seen a tread separation from the car· cass nor have we received any com· plaints about this alleged 'pheno· menon.' " Germany is the only European country that still has no speed limit on open stretches of their autobahn highway system_ Sierra's Hassbaum said a Pirelli factory rep would be contacting us in the near ...1.y.t.4fe . , ,r "., • ' . .
