Ken Carruthers led a Yamaha sweep
of the Talladega National road race.
Carruthers took the lead with II laps
remaining, and rode on to lead firstyear Expert Steve Baker and Gary
Fisher across the line. In the Junior/
Expert combined event, Yamaha's
Kenny Roberts shook off his National
DNF and took the win, besting Fisher
andrCarruthers. In the Junior ranks,
Florida's John Long continued his
season-long domination with a win
over Doug Teague and Pat Hennen.
Raip stopped the Novice race well
before the halfway point, and in a
controversial decision, the AMA called
it a race and gave the win to Gary
Blackman.

Ta,lladega was
also the site of an
AMA motocross National. Honda's
Gary Jones continued to chalk up
wins in the 250cc ranks, besting
Suzuki's Rich Thorwaldson and
Yamaha's Tim Hart. In the 500cc
ranks it was also business as usual for
Yamaha's Pierre Karsmakers as he
took the win over Wyman Priddy and
Mickey Boone.
The Belgian team of Roger DeCoster.
Sy1vainGeboers,Jaak Van Velthoven
and Raymond Heettn took annual
Motocross des Nations over the Swedish team. America, with only three
riders in Switzerland, finished fourth
in the standings. Jim Pomeroy led
theteam with a 5-7 moto tally, he was
backed up by Mike Hartwig and
John DeSoto.
Mike Rooney won the Northern
California Speedway Championship,
pq5ting 14 points in the all-5cratch
evbnt to win the title. Second went to
Alan Christian with 13, and John
Cunningham scored 12 for third.

The Oregon State Fair featured a
two-day motocross, and Bultaco rider
Chuck Sun was the star of the show,
winning the 250cc Senior class on
both days. Mark Gregson (Yam) also
scored double wins in the 125cc Juniors, as did Mini rider Mike Ormsby
(Hon).
The annual Bonneville Speed Week
saw a lot of two-wheeled speed records
set. Pops Yoshimura and Dale Alexaader combined to set seven new
marks, while Robert Barker set two
on a new 125 Can-Am and Warner
Riley set two in the 300cc class on a
H"arley-Davidson-based machine.
Yamaha rider Dennis Robinson topped the 360cc Expert class of a Calistoga, California, half mile. Trailing
him across the finish line were Bill
Calicura and Nick Nazzisis.
Ponderosa ace Monte Lee came close
to winning his 51 st overall victory in
the 86 races run at the venerable facility in Lancaster, California. A fouled
plug slowed Lee's charge momentarily, however, and Mike Johnston got
by for the overall win.
CZ rider Pat Richter was the Open
Expert winner in a Cal-Am motocross at Helvetta Park in Sacramento.
