(Hon~ Goat Breker leads at Saddlaback on his way to a second-mota Open win. Arnet, Hobbs hook Tri-Race wins at Saddleback By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA, AUG. 14 The California Racing Club along with IRC presented the fifth annual Tri-Race Series with today being the opener at 36 Saddleback Park. Featured with the series is $9500 wonh of cash prizes. A $1500 Pro purse is o££ered at each event with $1000 worth of giftcenificates for the Sportsmen. Despite financial woes at the Maico factory, Terry Hobbs isn't ready to abandon ship yet and took hi German bike to the 500cc Pro class win. Ontario Honda rider Ed Arnet, who won the week before, was out 10 do it again as he landed the 250cc Pro class viclOry. Cycle Works/La Habra Yamahasponsored Dave Fernandez took his Yamaha to the lead of the first molO of 500cc Pro racing. Hobb pulled past Fernandez around Webco Hill to claim the lead. ~ark White from International Yamaha caught up to Fernandez and slid by along the far hillside suaight. Because White was so muddy, Fernandez assumed that he was a lapped rider instead of someone taking over second place. Dean Welsh fit his Alba Honda bike into fourth ahead of Pro-Circuit's Jeff Conlin. The 500cc Pro class had a visilOr in the final molO. Goat Breker of American Honda arrived too late to enter the first molO but he made his presence known in the final event. Breker stayed in the leader's poition the entire race yet didn't take the money away from the locals because he was without a first-molO score. That was fair enough. The uack was freshly watered and half the class bit the slippery surface. On one of the tight turns after Webco Hill, Fernandez and White piled-up, which harmed only their score. Conlin dropped his Husky on the finish turn during the laps. Breker continued flawlessly while the others slipped around as best they could. Hobbs was the runner-up, with Jeff Long in third and Wei h placing in fourth again. Money wise it was Hobbs, Welsh, Fernandez, White and Long. Mike Beier was doing some testing for IRC tires and used five ets of tires throughout the day between the 125 and 250cc Pro classes. Just in case somebody wonders how one rider could get so many flat tires, Beier had fork problems with his bike, so he borrowed another to race in the 250cc Ward, Rodriguez, top Sun west Series GP By Charleen Ho PERRIS, CA, AUG. 28 It was not hard to tell who held the winning tickets al the fourth Sunwest Series event. Gordon Ward grabbed the 500cc win, Randy Rodriguez walked away with the Vets and Randy orman blasted 10 the 250cc win. Ward also went for the daily double; winning the trophy dash and lOp dollars for the day. Kol be rider Danny Sanchez smoked his way through the first turn of the 5005. By lap one Sanchez had established himself; but not without the company of Ward, who was hanging out with Rodriguez. Scott Wilkinson, Ray Cates and Norman were LUcked in close behind the leaders while Lars Larsson, Steve tith, and Mike Drown battled it out. Ward hung it out on through the infield to overtake Sanchez. Sanchez ran into some di££iculties and was surpassed by Rodriguez, Wilkinson, Drown and Larsson. Larsson saw a break and passed Drown, and so did anchez. Meanwhile, Rodriguez wasn't satisfied with second, so he just held the throttle open a split second longer to drive past Ward. Ward kept his cool, though, and within one lap he repassed Rodriguez. Norman maintained a strong third followed by Drown. Rl land "Bro" Rodriguez edged his way past Drown to move into fifth behind Wilkinson. Rodriguez charged to the end in an attempt to catch Ward. At the checkers it was Ward, "big" Rodriguez, Norman, Wilkinson and "little" Rodriguez. There was quite a display of men and machinery in the Vet class debut. Many had already competed in the 500cc event and were testing their (Tue stamina. Randy Rodriguez dominated the class with his Wheelsmith Maim from start LO finish. After building a 44-second lead there was no contest. Bill Dobbs held second for two laps until Dan Ayers came unmercifully upon him. Lars Larsson, Mike Good· win, and Kurt Dietrich were not the best of friends as they ba ttled it out. Larsson overtook Dobbs while Sa!D Groce surpassed Dietrich. Goodwm maintained fifth while Dieuich convinced Groce he was the better man for sixth. Rodriguez stretched hi's lead while Ayers desperately tried to keep Rodriguez in sight. Goodwi~ gave Dobbs the heat ueatment as Die:.uich applied the fire. Dobbs was never to be seen again. Larsson and Dieuich put on quite a show as Di~ uich maneuvered his way past Goodwin. At the finish, it was Rodriguez, Ayers, Dieuich, and Larsson. Saddleback Saturday cash to Arnet By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, AUG. 20 Honda rider Ed Arnet and Dallas Baker/Yamaha pilot Vince McMahon continued their rivalry ·in the 250cc Pro class at this weeks Saddleback Motocross event. Arnet and McMahon battled in both motos with Arnet getting the advantage in mid-moto and holding on to take home the top purse money. McMahon kept the battle close, but had to settle for double runner-up finishes. Honda/Wheelsmith/HPS rider Bill Keefe stayed in the hum LO finish third overall. Yamaha-mounted Brian Manley handled the I25cc Pro class in style by taking the checkers first in each moLO and leaving second place to Suzuki rider Sean Corcoran. Jon Ortner. pushed his Yamaha to third place. Top honors in the 2SOcc Intermediate class went to Honda rider Ernie Becker. Becker parlayed his back-toback number-two finishes imo the overall win as first moto winner Rob Peuin D F the second round. Mike Brown wheelied his KTM to the front of round two to clinch second overall with a 4-1 score ahead of Honda rider Kirt Goldie. Jose Hernandez powered his Maico to the Open Novice winner's circle despite tough competition [rom Yamaha rider Keith Ehlers, and Honda pilots Jim Caspio and Jeff Clausen. Clausen earned the second overall honors with Caspio rounding out the lOp three. Results 250 PRO: 1. Ed Arnll (Hon); 2. Vince McMlhon (Vam); 3. Bill Keefe {Honl. 125 PRO: 1. Briln Mlnlev (Vaml; 2.
