Christian cruises to Costa Mesa win By Jim Brown COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 2 Alan Christian must have done something good, for Lady Luck was definitely on his side in the Scratch main tonight in Costa 30 Mesa. Christian, sponsored by STP, First National Monatery and Jim Busby, was holding last place in the main when Leni Faas, the leader, broke his primary chain, causing Mike Bast and Mike Curoso to slow down 10 avoid Faas, then Christian snuck by on the outside for the lead and win. Faas has been running surprisingly weIllately, but Friday night in a heat race, running wheel 10 wheel with Kelly Moran, a tap from Moran sent Faas on his backside across the track. The win was awarded to Faas after an official ruling decided that Moran had taken him out. Moran's pit was filled with discontent, feeling that the decision was unfair. Mike CUTOSO made one of the best passes of the season in the Scratch semi. He was going full speed coming out of turn four in third place, when oneofthe bikes in front of him hesitated. CUTOSO somehow changed the direction of his machine and came under the entire pack full speed to take first place and the win. Handicap racing ended with Sam Ermolenko taking the win with white knuckles and a well-used bike. Ermolenko, sponsored by Captured Sea, The Frame Shop and Kimat, has been riding in a devil-may-care style on the outside and somehow keeps his bike up - or at least most of the .'t,Me ....J .1.0 either' Uans, ter. or win. Dennis Briggs won the Handicap consolation. John Sandona has apparently tamed his wheel ie-prone machine, as he won his heat and took econd in both semi and main. Randy Bennett, sponsored by Alan Christian Racing, was the man to beat in the Second Division. He won his heat race and went on 10 win the main. Shane McDonald and Robin Bourgeous were the other heat winners. Bill Weaver won his heat race and the Third Division main. Weaver was in front when the main had to be called after several crashes. Mike Buschman won the other third division heat. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Alen Christian; 2. Mike Curoso; 3. Mike Best; 4. Leni F•••. man; 3. Mike Bushman; 4. Mike Dwyer; 5. Russell Bacarella; 6. The ride was surprising because only a half-hour earlier Finch was overcome by the heat and passed out. After several anxious minutes, he was back on his feet asking for his leathers. Cody continued 10 have things his own way as he raced away from Gewecke to win event 10.
