In the Senior event was another win for Gary Charters and his famous 250 Suzuki. Off the first lap Charters came around leading with Art Knapp second. Larry Gorden was third on his C bike. Leading the Amateur was Bob Murry with Ron Gray right behind him. At the finish it was Charters chalking up another overall after three "hot" laps. Second was Knapp, and he took first Open. Gorden ended his ride out in front in the C bike class. Ron Gray moved into take the first in the Open Amateur class. Ho hum for the Vet race as Charters took another overall, leading all three laps. Doug Grant took second and first in the Open class. Charley Snyder moved up to pass Richard Jackson as these two took third and founh. In the Novice race T.F. Bingenheimer had the lead after one lap. On lap two Jim Farrand took the lead and held for the win. The women's race was dominated by Jolene Payne, who took an easy win. Honorable mention goes to Michele Balentine, who rode for the fun of it; it was good seeing her back. The kid's race wa exciting as usual. Keith Loonsfoot led for the first two laps until he slid OUL Right behind him was Frank Smith who took the lead for two laps until he endoed. Loonsfoot took the lead again on he last lap to take the win. Second was Brent Farrell with Jason Austin third. Sunday Smith, Ashcraft hot in 0.37 dual ES By Shirley Upp LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, AUG. 27-28 Dan Smith. Dan Ashcraft. Ed Pierce, Gary Charters, Bret Howell. Art KnapP. Bruce Lewellyn and Doug Grant were all as hot as Lucerne Valley as they took overall wins in their respective races at the Huntington Beach M.e. dual European Scrambles. Saturday 26 This time of year you only go to Lucerne Valley for business, and for Dan Smith and his big Husky business is exactly what he got down to when the banner dropped. Smith was awesome, leading the Open Amateurl Expert race all three laps. Dan Ashcraft (Hus) seized on the bomb run, but got his bike going again and came around second on lap one. Chris Crandall (Hon), who was having engine trouble and a flat, came through third with Ted Hunnicutt (Hus) closing the gap quickly from fourth. Sm ith took his well-earned first overall, thanking sponsors Husqvarna, Hi-Point Racing Products, Husky Products, ND, Terry Cable, Scott USA, Bell Helmets and AME Products. Taking second was Ashcraft with Hunnicutt moving up to third. In the Amateur ranks Brian Harris led all three laps. In the Novice race Jodie Partain took the lead and stayed there the entire race. Second race of the day was the 2505 and on the ExpertlAmateur course it was dominated by Ashcraft as he led wire to wire. Ashcraft said he grabbed the holeshOl and just went on to have a great ride. Ed Pierce had a good ride, ending up second. Howard McCasland, who is leading the 250cc class in points this year, brought his Honda in for third. The Amateur class featured the dice of the weekend between Brett Shaner and Scott Stearns, with Stearns taking the win after Shaner dropped a lap after having problems. The C bikes found Amateur Dale Knapp leading after one lap with Once again the Open Experts and Amateurs had the first race ofthe day. After a dicing bomb run between Ashcraft and Ken Upp(KTM), it was Ashcraft leading. Upp came through at second with Dan Smith third. At the finish it was Ashcraft, with no rear brake, taking win. Smith, after seizing on lap twO, had gotten going again to move past Upp and take second. Upp pulled in for his third as these three "fast" friends congratulated each other for some fine racing. Chris "The Animal" Crandall moved up to take founh. In the 250cc race Ashcraft (Hus) was at it again and led for the first two laps. Montclair Yamaha Ed Pierce was second and after Ashcraft seized Pierce was there to take the win. In for a second was Mark Zoller on his reliable KTM. Third after working up was John Blakeney, who had a super ride today. In the Amateur race it was all Eddie Augie, and in the novice race it was Dennis Nuckles coming back strong after a six-year layoff to take first overall. In the C bike race Dale Knapp finally took his overall win. After leading for three laps, Knapp took the overall as an Amateur. Howell and Braasch had a battle going for second place. Howell was in front of Braasch on lap one; on lap two Braasch led Howell. At the finish it was Howell taking second overall and first Expert with Braasch third overall and second Expert. The novice race was exciting as Beginner Brian Myrick was in the lead all the way for the overall. In the Senior race it was another win for 250cc rider Gary Charters as he once again led [rom wire to wire. A new Senior and a fast one is Jim Bringhurst and he came around for second overall. Bruce Lewellyn and Charlie Morri took third and fourth overall, in the Open class. In the Vet race it was a surprise to everyone when Doug Grant pulled in for the win. Gary Charters led for two laps, but was caught napping as Grant moved up to pass him. Charters had to turn on the gas to gel around Grant. This Charters wasn't prepared for and the extra gas COSl him as just out from the finish he ran out of gas. Grant came in for his weDearned win. These two gave spectators an exciting race. Richard Jackson was up with leaders until he lost the seat bracket and part of the frame with it. So taking third, behind Charters, was Monte Lee. After his terrible get-off some weeks ago, Bill Saltzman was back racing again. Afler doctors said he couldn't walk yet, lie decided to ride and that he did. The women's race can be summ~ up in two words: Lori Farmer. Jolene Payne had the lead on the start until she hit a rock which took out her rear brake.
